July 5 History Bikini Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—July 5, 2014:  Trust all enjoyed a marvelous safe and sane  4th and will enjoy these holidays of note, factoids and a quote from Lewis Thomas. Also hope you enjoy this poem on what Newport Beach on the 4th too often degenerates into. http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
            1. International Day of Cooperatives—created by the UN in 1992 and first celebrated in 1993 to create awareness of the importance of cooperatives in the agriculture and finance sectors to promote food security and rural development.
            2. Bikini Day—celebrating that great invention of Parisian fashion designer Louis Reard in 1946—another great reason to go the beach or pool today.
            3. National Cherry Pit Spitting Day—celebrated since 1973 in Eau Claire, Michigan with winners propelling a cherry pit in excess of 40 feet, but still waiting for ESPN to televise the contest.
            4. National Graham Cracker Day—celebrating the appearance of the Graham Cracker invented by Reverend Sylvester Graham in 1822 as part of the Graham Diet he formulated to rid his flock of sinful urges.
On this day in:
           a. 1934 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act which governs labor relations in this country into law and which became a focal point of the recent Supreme Court’s unanimous decision ruling that President Obama’s “recess” appointments to the NLRB were unconstitutional.
           b. 1937 to the bane of future members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Hormel introduced Spam into the market.
           c. 1996 Dolly the Sheep became the first mammal cloned from a sheep.
Things to ruin your day: “The cloning of humans is on most of the lists of things to worry about from Science, along with behavior control, genetic engineering, transplanted heads, computer poetry and the unrestrained growth of plastic flowers.” Lewis Thomas, noted 20th Century American physician and writer. Amen, Amen to the concern on computer poetry!
