Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—July 19, 2014: Totally skunked today on
decent holidays, but at least
found a few factoids and a quote by Ernest Hemingway for you to enjoy.
1.
National Flitch Day —celebrated
since 1104 in England by any married couple that could prove they had been
faithful and loving for a year so they could be awarded a flitch which is half
a pig and may be the source of the phrase “bring home the bacon.”
2. National
Daiquiri Day—celebrating
that great original drink-- white rum, lime juice, and sugar and
especially appropriate in the era of climate change the frozen daiquiri which
according to legend was inspired by Ernest Hemingway at El Floridita in Havana in the 1940s. The
bartender’s name was Constantino Ribalaigua and he is often considered the true
creator of the daiquiri.
3. Toss Away
the “Could Have” and “Should Have” Day—to celebrate this day, stop
living in what could have been and live in the present with an eye to the
improving future; probably inspired by Marlin Brando in On The Waterfront—I could have been a champ.
On this
day in:
a. 64 Circus Maximus caught fire in
Rome spreading to burn down most of Rome and leading to the legend most likely
untrue that Emperor Nero was fiddling while his city was burning to the ground.
b. in 1848 the first women’s rights
convention organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott was held in
Seneca Falls, New York.
c. in 1983 the first 3D CT image of
the human head was published.
d. in 2001 Michael Brunet
discovered the skull of Sahelanthropus
tchadensis, thought to be the oldest known species in the human family
tree, in the Djurab Desert, Chad. It lived 6-7 million years ago, about the
same time as the last common ancestor to apes and humans.
Another excuse to overdo it. “An intelligent man is sometimes
forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools.” Ernest Hemingway, noted 20th
Century American author who sadly committed suicide.
