July 27 History Bagpipe Appreciation Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—July 25, 2014:  Another meager day of holidays but you are probably on vacation anyway and do not need the time off. Hope you enjoy what is posted, along with the factoids and quote from Oliver Herford on bagpipes with a smile on your face and a well aged scotch in your cocktail glass.
           1. National Sleepy Head Day —celebrated in Finland by tossing water on the last person in a house to get up or better yet tossing that person into a lake or ocean.
           2. Bagpipe Appreciation Day—celebrating that great musical instrument revered by Scots and Irish everywhere.
           3. Parents’ Day—celebrated since 1994 to recognize the role of parents in the rearing of their children.
           4. National  Crème Brûlée Day/National Scotch Day—what better way to listen to bagpipes that with a well aged glass of scotch.
On this day in:
           a. 1789 the first federal agency was established-The Department of Foreign Affairs (later renamed the Department of State).
           b. 1949 the initial flight of the De Havilland Comet, the first jet powered commercial airliner took place.
           c. 1974 the House Judiciary Committee voted 27 to 11 to recommend the first article of impeachment against Richard Nixon.
           d. 1995 the Korean War Memorial was dedicated.
A thought as one enjoys the sound of the pipes: “The Irish gave the bagpipes to the Scots as a joke, but the Scots have not seen the joke yet.” Oliver Herford, noted 20th Century American writer
