july 10 History National Pina Colada Dayor

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—July 10, 2014:  Better but still meager day for holidays. Hope you enjoy the factoids, an original clerihew by the Alaskanpoet, and two quotes by Howard Hughes.
           1. Beatles Day (Hamburg/Liverpool)  celebrating since 2008 the return of the Beatles on July 10, 1964 from their first successful tour of  the United States.
           2. National Clerihew Day—commemorating the invention by Edmund Clerihew Bentley of the clerihew which you now know is a whimsical four lien whimsical poem—Ridley is my name/ Poetry is my game/ A retired parasite now active poet for hire/ Who on reading poetry will ever tire?                        3. National Pina Colada Day—commemorating a great way to put coconut in your diet especially on a hot summer day.
           4. Raging Bull Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1921 of one of the great middleweight boxers of all time Jake La Motta played by Robert De Niro in the movie Raging Bull.
On this day in:
           a. 1938 Howard Hughes completed the first solo circumnavigation by plane of the globe in the blistering pace of 91 hours.
           b. 1962 in a shrink the globe moment, Telstar, the world’s first communications satellite was launched.
           c. 2007 Erden Enuc started his solo human powered circumnavigation of the globe from Bodega Bay, California and after traveling 41,196 miles ended the journey at Bodega Bay on July 12, 2012. Amazing feat for someone 52 years old.
When it comes to racist remarks Donald Sterling has company:  “I am not a deranged millionaire. God dammit I am a billionaire!” Howard Hughes. “I can summarize my attitude about employing more Negroes very simply. I think it’s a wonderful idea for somebody else, somewhere else. I know this is not a very praiseworthy point of view, but I feel that Negroes have already made enough progress in the last century, and there is such a thing as overdoing it.” Howard Hughes, noted aviator, movie producer, industrialist and germaphobe
