July 12 History National Pecan Pie Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—July 12, 2014:  Still a meager day for holidays that taxes even the most creative mind of the Alaskanpoet as one starts the weekend. Found these dubious gems to enjoy, with a smile on your face, coated with sun screen, looking forward to ending the day with a pecan pie, along with the factoids and a quote from Tom Hayden on riots.
           1. Caesar Salad Day—with or without anchovies a great salad and the day appropriately named to celebrate of the birthday on this day in 100 B.C. of Julius Caesar who died on the Ides of March in 44 B.C.
           2. Piano Man  Day—commemorating not Billy Joel’s first hit single Piano Man,  but the birthday of one of America’s greatest classic pianists the first and perhaps only to achieve rock star status, Cliburn who died of bone cancer in 2013.
           3. Uncle Day—celebrating not the “Uncle” cry to inform the other fighter that you have quit fighting, but the birthday of one of America’s iconic comics and first real television star Milton Berle on this day in 1908, known to millions as “Uncle Miltie.”
           4. Wayne Chicken Show Day--celebrated for 33 years in Wayne, Nebraska around a chicken theme with parades and family events including of course an egg toss; put it on your calendar for next year http://www.chickenshow.com/history/.
           5. National Pecan Pie Day—great and tasty way to end a summer day. Enjoy!
On this day in:
           a. 1862 Congress established the Medal of Honor for bravery and heroism of soldiers then fighting in the Civil War.
           b. 1962 the Rolling Stones appeared in their first concert at the Marquee Club in London.
           c. 1967 in one of our less than stellar moments of race relations the Newark Riots commenced and lasted for five days leaving 26 dead and hundreds injured.
A reflective thought on the anniversary of the Newark riots: “The issue of civil rights was too much for the establishment to handle. One of the chapters of history that’s least studied by historians is the 300 to 500 riots in the U.S. between 1965 and 1970.” Tom Hayden, anti-Vietnam War activist, former husband to Hanoi Jane and in later life a California Assemblyman and State Senator
