Believe It Or Not—July 14, 2014: C’est domage but on this Bastille Day a meager faire for holidays.

1. Bastille
Day--if you are French or a Francophile today is a good day to celebrate
but do not overdo it and try to storm a jail; the police especially those in
Orange County have no sense of humor.
2. Republic
Day—celebrated in Iraq marking the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy
in 1958 but probably under great concern as IS moves closer to Baghdad.
3. National
Grand Marnier Day—celebrating that great after dinner liqueur.
On this
day in:
a. 1798 in one of this country’s
darker moments of censorship the Sedition Act making it a federal crime to
write or utter false or malicious statements about the government was enacted; it
expired before the Supreme Court ever had a chance to review it.
b. 1943 in Diamond, Missouri the George
Washington Carver Monument became the first National Monument to honor an African
American.
c. 1982 386BSD was released by Lynne
Jolitz and William Jolitz marking the beginning of the Open Source Operating
System Revolution. Linus Torvalds released his Linux soon afterwards.
