Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—July 1, 2014: Counting down to our
Independence Day and kudos to Canada on Canada Day. Good luck to Team U.S.A.
against Belgium today in the World Cup. Great
day to be a Canadian and hope you enjoy the other less memorable holidays along
with the factoids, and quote from Jane
Fonda with a smile on your face and a plate of chicken wings in front of you
while watching hopefully a U.S. win over Belgium in your hand.
1. Canada Day—celebrating the formation in 1867
of our great neighbor and ally to the north and the birthplace of this poet’s
mother in 1916.
2. Zip
Code Day—commemorating those five
digit numbers on the snail mail we continue to receive less of mandated on this
day in 1963.
3. Postage
Stamp Day—marking the issuance of federally mandated postage stamps to
send mail on this day in 1847—wonder how long in a digitally increasing world snail
mail will be used.
4. International
Chicken Wings Day—celebrating that great snack to enjoy while watching
Team U.S.A. prevail over Belgium today in the World Cup.
On this
day in:
a. 1881 the first international
telephone call was made between St. Stephen, New Brunswick and Calais, Maine.
b. 1903 the first Tour de France bicycle race,
a truly iconic test of human endurance, was held.
c. 1968 in a precursor to drones, the CIA
established the Phoenix Program in Vietnam to target and kill leaders of the
National Liberation Front in Vietnam.
Even
if you disagree with Hanoi Jane, sometimes she really gets it right: “When I am
in Canada, I feel that this is what the world should be like.” Jane Fonda.
My Canadian mother would agree completely.
