July 6, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National Fried Chicken Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For July 6, 2018 The situation facing the trapped Thai soccer team in a water filled cave has turned deadly as fears surface that oxygen levels in the cave are dropping and a retired Thai naval diver died when he ran out of air leaving the cave (Elon Musk has proposed inserting a 1 ½ mile tube through the water that the boys could walk through to safety); the left in its all out war against any nominee of Trump to replace Justice Kennedy is being blasted for its attacks on Amy Barrett for her Catholic faith; in a blow to uphold academic freedom the Wisconsin Supreme Court has ordered Marquette University to reinstate a fired political science professor who had blogged against gay marriage; on the fashion front Instagram model Nadine Bruna has lost 80  and 50 percent of her vision in her right and left eye respectfully after undergoing silicon insertions to her eyes to change her eye color in a procedure outlawed in the U.S.; another favorable jobs report showing the addition of over 200,000 new jobs and an increase in the labor participation rate; on the terrorism front Sholo Asahara and six of his followers were hanged for a Sarin nerve gas attack on a Tokyo subway attack in 2004; in Chicago through July 5, 2018, 1427 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 221 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Black Eyed Peas, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact if you are not forced to listen to the mendaciloquence on the floors of Congress; a relevant quote from Chris Boardman on the Tour de France, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. National Fried Chicken Day—clueless as to why the observance is held on this day or when it started but today is the day to get great bargains on fried chicken.
2. Comic Sans Day—commemorating the release of the font by Microsoft in 1994.
3. 2009 Number One Song— the number one song in 2009 on a run of 14 weeks in that position was “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSD4vsh1zDA
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “mendaciloquence” which means lying speech which describes to a tee what you hear on the floors of Congress.
5. Father of Rock and Roll—celebrating the birth on this day in 1925 of the Father of Rock and Roll Bill Haley whose band was Haley and the Comets; sadly he was an alcoholic that could never stay sober and died way too early on February 9, 1981.
         On this day in:
a. 1957 three years before they formed the Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time as teenagers at the Woolton Fete..
b. 1962 The Late, Late Show, the world’s longest chat show by the same broadcaster aired for the first time on RTE 1 in Ireland..
c. 1986 Davis Phinney became the first American to win a road stage in the Tour de France.
d. 1988 the Piper Alpha drilling rig in the North Sea was destroyed by an explosion and fire, killing 169 of the 230 oil workers working aboard the rig, making the accident the largest off shore oil disaster in history in terms of loss of life.
 e. 1990 the Economic Frontier Foundation was founded to protect online digital communications from government interference.
Reflections on the Tour de France by someone who has competed in it: “There simply is nothing else like it. And, as a test of physical and mental endurance it has no equal. Other sports may be as intense, as pressurized, as hard for short periods: But the Tour does on day after day after day. It’s the only race in the world where you have to get a haircut halfway through.”–Chris Boardman, former pro cyclist, multiple times holder of the Hour Record, one of cycling’s most prestigious rewards.
