July 11, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not World Population Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For July 11, 2018 Trump is at a NATO Summit castigating the  Europeans for not spending the agreed amount of 2% of GNP on defense spending and castigating Germany for buying its natural gas from Russia as opposed to the U.S.; on the obstructionist front Schumer is depending millions of documents relating to Kavanaugh’s time with Ken Starr and the Bush Administration in an attempt to delay the confirmation vote until after the midterms to preserve Blue seats in states Trump won by double digits (the hysteria in opposition to Kavanaugh by the likes of Harris, Schumer, Warren and Blumberg is despicable); Kerry the feckless former Secretary of State that deceived us with the Iran nuclear deal railed against Trump’s criticism of the lack of NATO countries spending on defense; Schumer has his foot in his mouth claiming Trump is friendlier with Russia than NATO and demanding that Trump not meet with Putin one on one; Behar made a fool of herself on The View demanding that Trump does not have the right to pick a SCOTUS Justice since he is under investigation by the witch-hunt for collusion and obstruction of justice (add the Constitution to the list of writings that woman has never read); Lisa Page was a no show before Congress and will be facing potential contempt of congress for failing to appear; Manafort may be in solitary confinement in jail but according to the Special Counsel’s office he is receiving VIP treatment with a private phone, restroom and shower, and laptop and work space; in Chicago, through July 10, 2018, 1468 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 229 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Iggy Azalea,  factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact if married it is not a misalliance; a relevant quote from Jhumba Lahiri on the effect of writing, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. 1. World Population Day—created by the UN in 1989 to address population issues such as family planning as the Earth continues to become a more crowded planet.
2. Free Slurpee Day (7-Eleven Stores)—today is the day to escape the heat and humidity with a free ice cold slurpee at 7-Eleven.
3. 2014 Number One Song— the number one song in 2014 on a run of 7 weeks in that position was “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-zpOMYRi0w
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “mesalliance” which means an unsuitable marriage an undesirable condition topped only by the disastrous divorce that is certain to follow.
5. To Interpret Maladies—celebrating the birth on this day in 1967 of Jhumba Lahiri, noted Pulitzer Prize winning author of such works as The Lowland and Interpreter of Maladies.
      On this day in:
a. 1921 former President of the United States William Taft was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the only person in our history to hold both offices.
b. 1924 Eric Liddell won the Gold Medal in the 400 meters after refusing to run the 100 meters because the race was held on Sunday; the win was memorialized in the movie Chariots of Fire.
c. 1962 in a the world became a smaller place moment, the first transatlantic television transmission occurred.
d. 1977 Martin Luther King, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
e. 1979 Slylab, America’s first space station was destroyed over the Indian Ocean upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Reflections on the power of writing: “For surely it is a magical thing for a handful of words, artfully arranged, to stop time. To conjure a place, a person, a situation, in all its specificity and dimensions. To affect us and alter us, as profoundly as real people and things do.” Jhamba Lahari.
