July 22, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Parents' Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For July 22, 2018 The City of Angles was anything but that on Saturday when a gunman after shooting his grandmother 7 times and his girlfriend once ran into a Trader Joes in Silver Lake to hold customers and employees hostage for three hours before surrendering (one person, an employee, was caught in the shoot out and died); Branson was under a severe thunder storm warning 30 minutes prior to the capsizing of the Duck which calls into question why the boat was on Table Rock Lake when the winds were blowing at 73 mph which is 2 mph less than hurricane force; HRC was back on stage at the OZY Fest in NYC blasting Trump for Helsinki and his failure to accept intel warnings about Russian election meddling attempts while Obama was in South Africa attacking Trump not by name but by characteristics of being a strong leader; the islands of the Caribbean hammered by Irma and Maria are reeling under a new assault, this time mounds of sargassum that is coating island beaches which is not helpful for the tourist trade; finally after months of slowwalking, the DOJ has released its FISA Court application to wiretap Carter Page which clearly shows that the infamous anti-Trump Steele Dosier was the substantial foundation for the warrant (the true example of Russian collusion involves the DNC and HRC campaign); through July 20, 2018, 1581 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 255 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to the Bing Crosby,  factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that the MSM is called out for minifying the accomplishments of the Trump administration, a relevant quote from Bob Dole on religion and government,  secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Parents’ Day—created by proclamation of President Clinton in 1994 to recognize and honor the contributions of parents in the upbringing of their children.
2. Spoonerism Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1844 of William Spooner, a lecturer for 60 years but whose intellect coupled with bad eyesight caused him to utter phrases that were not what was intended and which became known as spoonerisms—e.g. “It is kisstomary to cuss the bride.”
3. 1944 Number One Song— the number one song in 1944 on a run of 4 weeks in that position was “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Bing Crosby. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO26pBRToFI
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “minify” which means to diminish which describes the MSM in terms of its reporting of Trump accomplishments.
5. V-Man celebrating the birth on this day in 1922 of former Congressman and longtime Senator from Kansas, Bob Dole who lost to Bill Clinton who was running for his second term and left politics but is perhaps best remembered for his commercials in favor of Viagra.
    On this day in:
a. 1937 the U.S. Senate voted down a proposal by President Roosevelt to increase the number of justices on SCOTUS.
b. 1946 the Irgun bombed the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, the site of civil administrative and military headquarters in Mandatory Palestine, killing 91 civilians and military personnel.
c. 1990 Greg LeMond won this third Tour de France after leading almost the entire race.
d. 2003 members of 101st Airborne aided by Special Forces killed Sadam Hussein’s two sons Uday and Qusay along with Qusay’s 14 year old son.
e. 2011 Norway was subject to two terrorist attacks, one a bombing in Oslo followed by a mass shooting by Anders Breivik dressed as a policeman at a youth camp on Utøya Island which resulted in 8 killed in Oslo and 69 killed on the island.
Reflections on religion from the birthday boy Bob Dole: “As a young man in a small town, my parents taught me to put my trust in God, not government, and never confuse the two.”
