1. World Marriage Day--celebrating the institution of marriage two days after the DOJ announced that all federal court benefits and rights available to married couples would also be available to same sex domestic partners, state laws defining marriage notwithstanding.
2. Autism Sunday--observed to create awareness and urge cures for the victims
of autism and Asberger's Disease. Parents who struggle with children with these
two afflictions are the equivalent of true saints.
3.
Reading In The Bathtub Day--absolutely my favorite; okay to not pay attention and drop
your book or magazine into the soothing waters, but not your Kindle or
Nook.
4.
Toothache Day--
not another marketing ploy of the ADA like Kids'
Smile Day previously reported by the
Alaskanpoet, but in honor of the patron saint of toothaches St. Appolina who endured
having all her teeth broken by an angry mob trying to force her to recant her
beliefs in Christianity and then flung herself into a fire. Nice factoid to
remember if you are in a dental chair waiting for the Novocain to take effect. On this day in:
a. 1870 to the joy of future comedians looking for subject matter, President
Grant signed a proclamation creating the U.S. Weather Service.
b. 1895 William C. Morgan, to the joy of future beach goers and winter snow
bound athletes who did not ski, invented the game of Minorette (do not ask me
why this name) which became known as volleyball, an Olympic sport since 1964.
c. 1964, in the official crowning of the start of "Beatle
Mania", The Beatles appeared on "the Ed Sullivan Show" watched
by 73 million viewers, least 38% of the U.S. population--how would you like to
have been one of those spin the plates acts following that appearance on the
show?
Divorce and
frailty of forecasts explained in brief: "When all is said and done, the
weather and love are the only two elements of which you cannot be sure."
Alice Hoffman, noted American author, best known for her book, Practical
Magic. Just once it would be nice for a weatherperson to
forecast-"Take this to the bank, tomorrow we will have weather."
