Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History- February 12, 2014-Lincoln's Birthday

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--February 12, 2014:  Before you stress out over a gift for your Valentine (a customized poem by the Alaskanpoet is always the best choice--are you reading this as you are almost out time ?), take a deep breath, be thankful you do not live in those regions of the country getting hammered by snow and ice, yet again and enjoy for today these factoids, quote and holidays:
             1.
Lincoln’s Birthday--if only we had presidents today of his stature and integrity--why he is on the lowest form of our currency which is on its last legs  as opposed to the highest is beyond me.
            2. Red Hand Day--not a show of hands on the growing number of voters indicating how they may vote in the fall after losing their doctor or their insurance, but an observance to end the practice of the child soldier barely out of puberty in combat in many places throughout the world.
            3. Darwin Day--celebrating the birthday of Charles Darwin and his impact on the study of evolution; unfortunately, not celebrated in the Bermuda Triangle equivalence of nonevolution, the halls of Congress, White House and federal bureaucracies where reason seems to be evolving in the reverse direction.
            4. Paul Bunyan Day--not celebrated by the friends of the spotted owl, but in logging communities across the nation--Paul and Babe would be at home as another Arctic "Perfect Storm' is hitting the U.S.
On this day in:
             a. 1909 the NAACP was founded.
             b. 1947 designer Christian Dior unveiled the "New Look" in Paris re-establishing Paris as the fashion capital of the world and dooming future husbands and boyfriends to big dollar outlays on Valentine's Day.
             c. 2001 the space probe NEAR landed on the asteroid Eros. It was the first time that any craft had landed on a small space rock--testament to the laws of physics and the navigation skills of NASA.
Words to listen to on this day and all others: "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our lose freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Abraham Lincoln
