Ridley's Believe It Or
Not--February 4, 2014: Before
you stress out over a gift for your Valentine (a customized poem by the Alaskanpoet
is always the best choice), take a deep breath, decide whether you are going to
celebrate Drop Your Jerk Week, but enjoy for today these holidays:
1. World Cancer Day--honoring the progress made in this multi-type disease but reminding us of the need to continue research leading to cures and ways to reduce cases, e.g. reducing smoking (leading cause of lung cancer).
2. Facebook's Birthday-- on February 3, 2004, Facebook did not exist;
today on its 10th birthday over 1,25 billion users--don't feel guilty if you
did not send a gift to co-founder Mark Zuckerberg--he's worth north of $30
billion. Do celebrate by updating your page and checking your wall.1. World Cancer Day--honoring the progress made in this multi-type disease but reminding us of the need to continue research leading to cures and ways to reduce cases, e.g. reducing smoking (leading cause of lung cancer).
3. National Quacker Day--no, it's not a holiday to honor the Oregon Ducks athletic program but a line of women's clothing and accessories by, you guessed it, the Quacker Factory (where else but here can you find notes such as this).
On this day in:
a. 1824 J.W. Goodrich introduced rubber galoshes for sale to the public (not much demand in California today facing its worst drought in over a hundred years).
b. 1859 the Codex Sinaiticus (the Sinai Bible) consisting of large portions of the Old and New Testaments copied in the 4th Century was discovered in Egypt.
c. 1861 six Southern states met in Montgomery, Alabama to form the Confederate States of America and elect Jefferson Davis as its president (same day in 1789 that the Electoral College elected George Washington unanimously as our first president) leading to the Civil War, the costliest war in this nation's history--625,000 dead, almost 2% of the population.
d. 1998 on a lighter note, Bill Gates, a man used to having his cake and eating it too, was hit dead on in the face by Joel Godin, a noted prankster and known as L'entarteur (the pieman), with a cream pie while in Brussels visiting European Union officials. No charges were pressed by Gates.
A near Valentine's Day thought before updating one's Facebook page once again: “Discover the fulfillment of intimate relationships with flesh-and-blood neighbors and teammates in concrete place and time, and we escape the pressure of mainstream media to channel intimacy only as virtual embrace.” Jose Panete-Aceves and John Hayes, authors of Living Mission--Voices of the New Friars.
Kudos
to the Seahawks for an absolute destruction of the Broncos--at least the ads
were enjoyable as was the O'Reilly interview of President Obama during the
pregame show. Please enjoy the 140
