Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-February 10, 2014 Westminster Dog Show

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--February 10, 2014:  Before you stress out over a gift for your Valentine (a customized poem by the Alaskanpoet is always the best choice--are you reading this as you are
almost out time ?), take a deep breath and watch the dogs performing and envy a dog's life after you enjoy for today these factoids, quote and a few hard to find holidays:
             1.
Plimsoll Day--celebrating not the sneakers of the same class but that 19th Century member of the English Parliament, Samuel Plimsoll who championed seamen's safety (always music to this former seiner's ears) and was  known for the Plimsoll Line marking the waterline for a ship with its maximum weight of cargo on board.
            2. Umbrella Day--30 percent chance of needing it today in Southern California; given our drought emergency in California, this is one holiday I wished we celebrated more often.
            3. Clean Out Your Computer Day--absolutely a good idea to delete some of that clutter, especially emails from past no longer Valentines in case current Valentines are browsing your Outlook.
            4. Westminster Dog Show--if a canine lover three days starting on Monday of pedigrees strutting their stuff for Best of Show (in a first, non pedigrees are eligible in a blow for award equality).
  On this day in:
            a. 1870  the YWCA was founded in New York City.
            b. 1954 President Eisenhower warned against U.S. involvement in Vietnam, a warning which was not heeded, putting over 58,000 names on The Wall in D.C.
            c. 1996 IBM's Deep Blue became the first computer to win a chess game against a reigning chess champion Russian Gary Kasparov.
Four legged Valentine's Day Card: "Chocolates will melt in your mouth but a Maltese will melt your heart and if on a walk that Maltese will attract more women than a magnet will attrack iron filings." Anon. That is a statement you can take to the bank, day after day.  Hope a Maltese wins Best of Show.
