Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-February 1, 2014 National Freedom Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--February 1, 2014:  On the eve of Super Bowl Sunday and Groundhog's Day (for our fellow citizens in the continual stream of arctic vortexes hope no shadow seen) found this traditional holidays to observe:
             1.
National Freedom Day--celebrating Lincoln's signing on this day in 1865 of the joint resolution of Congress abolishing slavery becoming the 13th Amendment to the Constitution when ratified later by the States. Hard to believe a large segment of our population were slaves less than 150 years ago.

             2. First Day of Black History Month
             3. Change Your Password Day--Given the number of hacking incidences like Target and Michael's, this is a great holiday idea--for those celebrating Social Security Check Appreciation Day, make sure you write down the new password someplace safe and easy to find.
             4.  National Serpent Day--great concept but a little late for the 400 snakes found in a small house in Santa Ana lived in by a teach at an elementary school in Newport Beach www.alaskanpoetcommentator.blogspot.com
              5.  Take Your Child To The Library Day--another really great concept!
On this day in:
             a. 1960 four black students began the first Greensboro lunch counter sit-in, defying segregation.
             b. 1996 the Communications Decency Act was passed by Congress (signed into law by President Clinton on February 8, 1996).
             c. 2004 in a moment that proves half time shows at the Super Bowl do not merit a bathroom break, singer Janet Jackson's right nipple was exposed due to a "wardrobe malfunction", creating a firestorm over the decline in decency in the media, topped off with a record fine of $550,000 by the FCC against CBS, ultimately overturned on appeals.
A reflective thought as we commence Black History Month:” We should emphasize not Negro history, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice." - Carter Woodson, noted Afro-American historian, writer and journalist, known also as the "Father of Black History".

As we approach Super Bowl XLVIII which may be played in sub freezing temps with snow falling, it is not who wins or loses, but the quality not of the play but of the Super Bowl ads!
