Ridley's believe It Or Not--This Day In History-February 6, 2014 Ronald Reagan Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--February 6, 2014:  Before you stress out over a gift for your Valentine (a customized poem by the Alaskanpoet is always the best choice), take a deep breath, and celebrate Canadian Maple Syrup Day (Enjoy it while you can since if we stick it to the Canadians on KeystoneXL, they might add it to the tar sands oil they will be selling to China) by pouring some over some blueberry pancakes and enjoy for today these holidays:
             1.
Waitangi Day--observed by 20 million sheep and 3 million Kiwis celebrating New Zealand's founding.

             2. Lame Duck Day--not in honor of injured Oregon players but for those in their last term of office or who have reached the ceiling of their competence--sadly not observed in the DHHS, IRS, NSA or DOJ, in the scandal or incompetence news.
             3. Ronald Reagan Day--honoring a B actor ("win one for the Gipper notwithstanding"), great governor, a really great president, and a man with a really, really great sense of humor (see below) and observed in California and 21 other states; true to his conservative principles it is not a paid State Holiday.
 On this day in:
             a. 1958 Ted Williams signed a contract with Boston Red Sox for $135,000 ( almost  $1.1 million today which would make him only 21st highest paid on the Sox 2013 World Series Championship Team--go figure!).
             b. 1959 Jack Kirby at Texas Instruments filed the first patent for an integrated circuit.
             c. 1987 smoking rules were adopted for all federal buildings.
A bit of Reagan humor to brighten your day:
1. "What makes him think a middle-aged actor, who's played with a chimp, could have a future in politics?" -on Clint Eastwood's bid to become mayor of Carmel--from the star of Bedtime for Bonzo.
2. "I'm afraid I can't use a mule. I have several hundred up on Capitol Hill." -refusing a gift of a mule, from the host of Death Valley Days and its 20 mule teams.
3. "Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying." in response to the question of his age and its effect on his being President.
