       1. Math 2.0 Day—celebrating since 1972 the melding of math and computer technology in the field of statistics.

       5. A Recipe Is Worth Millions—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1831 of John Pemberton who survived service in the Confederate Army to create Coca-Cola.

On this day in:                                           

       a. 1889 the first issue of The Wall Street Journal was published.

       b. 1898 Skagway’s crime boss Soapy Smith was killed in a shoot out on the Juneau Wharf in Skagway, Alaska.

       c. 1932 ironic that while today trading has been halted on the NYSE for almost two hours, on this day in 1932 the Dow Jones Average reached its lowest level in history 41.22.

       d. 2011 the Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched on the final Space Shuttle Mission.
       e. 2015 due to unknown computer glitches, the New York Stock Exchange halted trading, United Airlines grounded all its planes and The Wall Street Journal’s web site was rendered inoperable. 

A prediction gone wrong: “The shuttle tomorrow is truly like laying the last spike on the transcontinental railroad, only much more so. And whether or not we’re going to see in the next 10 or 20 years, there are people alive today who will see manufacturing in space from moon materials or from asteroids.” Jerry Brown, governor of California 1977 Sad to realize that this leader in space exploration is now reduced to hitching rides on Russian space craft to get into space.
