       a. 1703 Daniel Defoe author of Robinson Crusoe and over 500 books, journals and pamphlets was placed in a pillory but according to legend and perhaps since he was also a poet was not pelted with noxious objects but rather flowers and then toasted to his health.  
       b. 1790 the first U.S. patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins for a potash process.
       c. 1970 in a day known as Black Tot Day, the Royal Navy ended its centuries old tradition of a daily rum ration for its sailors.   
       d. 1990 Nolan Ryan became the 20th pitcher to win 300 games.   
       e. 1991 in a no more complaints about woman drivers day, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of allowing women to fly combat missions.

       b. 1916 the Black Tom Island Munitions Depot was sabotaged by German agents with explosions killing five and felt as far away as Philadelphia.
       c. 1930 at Montevideo, Uruguay, Uruguay won the first FIFA World Cup and probably the last free of bribes by host countries to FIFA. 
       d. 1975 Jimmy Hoffa disappeared from the parking lot of the Manchus Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and was never seen again.    
       e. 2003 the last Volkswagen Bug rolled off an assembly line in Mexico.

       b. 1899 the first Hague Convention, providing for the standards to be observed by nations at war such as banning the execution of soldiers who had surrendered and the protection of hospital ships, was signed.
       c. 1981 over 700 million viewers watched the televised wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
       d. 1987 British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President Francois Mitterand signed an agreement providing for the construction of a tunnel under the English Channel.
       e. 1996 the child protection provisions of the Communications Decency Act were struck down by a federal appeals court.

       a. 1868 the 14th Amendment to the Constitution was certified by the Secretary of State to have been ratified by the requisite number of states and was now part of the Constitution.  
       b. 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, commencing World War I.
       c. 1932 President Hoover ordered the U.S. Army to disburse the Bonus Army that had descended on Washington, D.C. demanding the payment of bonuses for their service in World War I that were due to paid in 1945.
       d. 1945 a U.S. B-25 flying in thick fog crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, killing 14 people and injuring 26 and prompting passage of the Federal Tort Claims Act granting victims injured by torts caused by the federal government to sue.
       e. 1982 San Francisco, now best known for being a Sanctuary City that harbored Francisco Sanchez who shot and killed Kathryn Steinle, became the first city in the U.S. to ban private citizens from owning handguns.
Reflections on hepatitis: "Hepatitis A and B are vaccine preventable diseases, yet they continue to be the most commonly reported vaccine preventable diseases.        a. 1663 the English Parliament passed the Second Navigation Act requiring any goods shipped to the American colonies be shipped in English ships from English ports.  
       b. 1866 the first permanent transatlantic telegraph cable was completed between Valeria Island, Ireland and Heart’s Content, Newfoundland.
       c. 1890 Vincent Van Gogh shot himself and died two days later. 
       d. 1953 China, North Korea and the United States signed the Korean War Armistice, ending hostilities. South Korea refused to sign but agreed it would observe its terms.   
       e. 1995 the Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

       a. 1908 Charles Bonaparte, the Attorney General of the United States, ordered the immediate staffing of the Office of Examiner, the precursor of the FBI.   
       b. 1936 in one of his few official acts before abdication King Edward VIII unveiled the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
       c. 1945 the heavy cruiser the USS Indianapolis delivered the parts to assemble the atomic bomb to Tinian Island which was dropped on Hiroshima. She was later sunk by a Japanese submarine enroute from Tinian to Manila. 
       d. 1948 President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981 desegregating the U.S. Military. 
       e. 1990 The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was signed into law by President Bush.

       c. 1908 Ajinomoto was founded after Kikanae Ikeda discovered that MSG was key ingredient of kombu soup and patented a process for manufacturing MSG. 
       d. 1909 Louis Bieriot became the first person to fly a heavier than air machine across the English Channel. 
       e. 1965 Bob Dylan went electric as he plugged in at the Newport Folk Festival, marking a major change on how country and folk music was performed.
