Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History April 8, 2014 Be Kind To Lawyers Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--April 8, 2014Found these unknown holidays worthy of mention or celebrating in a culinary fashion to go with the factoids and quote to enjoy as you are getting ready to watch the final, final dance on Tuesday. Kudos to the male Huskies of UConn for defeating Kentucky last night for the men’s title. The distaff side of UConn plays Notre Dame tonight for the women’s championship. If the women Huskies win thereby causing UConn to be only school to win both men’s and women’s titles in the same year, not once but now twice, will the NCAA to raise money in the NLRN Northwestern football unionization case allow the two Huskies to play for the true on and only National Championship? Interesting thought!
              1. DABDay (Draw a Bird Day)—an international holiday originating in England, not honoring artistic talent in drawing the middle finger but to draw a picture of our avian friends.
              2. National Be Kind to Lawyers Day—this is a holiday that must be a joke, originating on April Fools’ Day, but it is not—conceived by a non lawyer who markets marketing services to professionals like lawyers. Dick the Butcher had it right and his wisdom in dealing with lawyers because of the “holiday” will not be repeated here.
              3. International Day of the Roma—celebrating the culture and traditions of the Romani people (often referred to as “Gypsies”) who fled India en masse some 800 years ago due to natural calamities or Islamic invasion.
              4. National Empanada Day--another caloric holiday honoring a delicioco from Portugal and Spain first served in the U.S. at Taco Bell consisting of a folded pastry stuffed with chicken, pork loin or cod to sink your teeth into.
              On this day in:
               a. 1952 to avoid a national steel workers' strike during the Korean War, President Truman, ordered U. S. steel mills seized.
               b. 1959 a group of computer manufactures, users, and academics led by Grace Hopper met to discuss development of new computer programming language to be known as COBOL.
               c. 2008 although sitting on huge petroleum reserves, the first skyscraper to incorporate wind turbines for power generation was completed in Bahrain.
Simplification of the jury system in a few words: “A jury consists of 12 persons to decide which side has the better lawyer.” Robert Frost…another example of why we need more poets and less lawyers.
