Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In Histroy-April 11, 2014 International Louie, Louie Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--April 11, 2014Found these unknown holidays worthy of mention or celebrating in a culinary fashion to go with the factoids and quote to enjoy.  Great day to invite friends over for cheese fondue and dance to Louie, Louie.
              1. International Louie, Louie Day—celebrating the birth of Richard Beery in Extension, LA on this day, April 11, 1935 who created one of the best iconic party songs ever created.
              2. Barbershop Quartet Day—celebrating that unique brand of American music around since the 1900’s-four guys with great voices although most likely not singing Louie, Louie but blessed with its own society—Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 11, 1938.
              3. National Pet Day—observed since 2005 to bring attention to the plight of thousands of pets awaiting adoption in shelters, or failing that, euthanasia.
              4. World Parkinson’s Disease Day—observed to create awareness of a disease that faces too many of us after reaching 65, a slow progressive loss of motor skills and shaking. Wear a red tulip today to signify your support of research and efforts to find a cure.
              5. National Cheese Fondue Day—no list of holidays complete without one of my favorites, cheese fondue—great party meal but if dancing to Louie, Louie with a bit of bread dipped in fondue, try not to spill the cheese on the carpet.
 On this day in:
                a. 1876 the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was founded.
                b. 1968 Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, outlawing racial discrimination in housing.
                c. 1976 Apple 1 was introduced.
From the perspective of a celebrity suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and why a red tulip signifies hope: “Medical science has proven time and again that when the resources are provided, great progress in the treatment, cure, and prevention of disease can occur.” Michael J. Fox, noted actor.
