1. International Day of Landmine Awareness and Assistance—sadly observed too often from the awareness standpoint with photos of countless innocent men, women and children injured by mines left behind from the numerous conflicts that have cursed our planet. Unfortunately, there is no shelf life on mines.
2. World Rat Day--started in 2002 not to honor whistleblowers and stool pigeons but rather to promote rats as adorable pets; given the movie Willard not sure if this is a holiday to sign up for.
3. National Cordon Bleu Day—another great holiday to sink your teeth into, honoring not the culinary school of the same name but that delicious roulade of chicken (or veal), ham, and Swiss cheese, which first starting appearing 400 years after its appearance in France on our shores in the 60’s.
4. National
Walk to Work Day—where
else can you save money, feel good about yourself and thumb your nose at OPEC
all in one simple act of keeping the car in the garage and walking to work.
On this day in:
a. 1968
Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis,
Tennessee, one year to the day in 1967 he had previously given his “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence”
speech at Riverside Church, New York City.
b. 1973 Bill
Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft corporation.
c. 1984
President Ronald Reagan called for a ban on chemical weapons; sadly, as the
events in Syria continue to prove red lines notwithstanding, the ban has not
been heeded.
What does a dollar buy from
Microsoft these days: “The other thing is that if you look at the total industry spend, most of it
is on activities where there’s no value added. Every dollar you spend on
software from Microsoft, you spend $6 trying to get it to do anything.”
Microsoft Vice President U.S. Enterprise and Partner Group (EPG) vice president Ron
Markezich. Amazing candor in an interview not seen in Congress or the White
House.
