Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-April 7, 2014 World Health Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--April 7, 2014Found these unknown holidays worthy of mention or celebrating in a culinary fashion to go with the factoids and quote to enjoy as you are getting ready to watch the final dance Monday and Tuesday. Kudos to the Huskies of UConn for having both men and women’s teams in the finals and condolences to the Cardinal, after leading UConn in the first half for the longest any team has done so this season, for losing on Sunday.
              1. World Health Day—celebrating the date of creation of the World Health Organization on April 7, 1948 and focusing this year on the vector borne diseases that infect over a billion people each year.
              2. International Beaver Day—not celebrating or bemoaning those individuals who are way too busy but rather the accomplishments of the real beavers whose dam building is essential to the creation and preservation of wetlands.
              3. New Beer Day—definitely a holiday to toast to—the celebration of legalization of the sale of beer and wine after the implementation of Prohibition by the enactment of the Cullen-Harrison Act on March 22, 1933 allowing the sale of 3.2% beer (believed to be to low in alcohol to cause intoxication) commencing on April 7, 1933. Readers first alerted to the holiday on its Eve April 6, yesterday; fortunately purchasers did not have to line up for the stroke of midnight.
              4. National Coffee Cake Day-- another caloric holiday to sink one’s teeth into that speaks for itself.
              5. National Tater Day—celebrated in Benton Kentucky since 1843 as a day to rejoice  spring and a market place to exchange slips for sweet potatoes (oldest such market day in U.S.) and like all good holiday celebrations has evolved into a great tourist attraction.
On this day in:
               a. 1954 ignoring the fact that the China dominoes and the Vietnam dominoes are historic enemies, President Eisenhower propounded his “falling dominoes” rationale for U.S. action to curtail the spread of communism in Southeast Asia—Sadly, the biggest domino is The Wall and the 58,269 names as of 2013 engraved on it.
               b. 1964 IBM introduced its System/360 computer, punch cards and all and most students’ introduction to computer science at the time.
               c. 1969 the Internet observed its first symbolic birthday with the publication of RFC 1  entitled "Host Software", was written by Steve Crocker of UCLA; anyone who predicted on that day the growth and importance of the internet was either extremely  lucky or had spiritual assistance.
If only for this day your doctor might give this sound medical advice: “The I in illness is isolation, and the crucial letters in wellness are we “Anon
