Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—December 24, 2015, 393 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Trust your Christmas Eve is off to a great start and your shopping is now complete; as always, I hope you enjoy Thursday’s holidays and observances, a music link to Helen Reddy, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Charles Dickens, looking forward to enjoying a cup of egg nog, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Feast of the Seven Fishes—observed in Italy and in Italian American households by eating a grand meal consisting of seven seafood dishes—nothing like servings of salmon to reduce the cholesterol to be able to enjoy a Christmas Day ham and prime rib.
2. Procrastinators’ Purgatory—bemoaning the fate of the procrastinating shoppers frantically trying to complete their Christmas shopping but some envy as all of the expensive must have gifts have probably been all grabbed from the shelves to the relief of their overstretched wallets.
3. 1974 Number One S ong—celebrating the number one song in 1974 on a brief run of one week in that position Angie Baby by Helen Reddy. Here is a link to Helen Reddy performing Angie Baby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg9U-jQjYlU
4. National Egg Nog Day—celebrating the essential drink during the Christmas season, especially if it has been spiked with rum or brandy; if it has in moderation as one would not want to see a repeat of the Egg Nog Riot that rocked West Point in 1828.
5. Even Wrestling Can Be Deadly—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1971 of Mexican professional wrestler Jesus Silva who was known as Oro and who tragically died in the ring at the age of 21 after striking his head on the mat and suffering an cranial aneurysm.
On this day in:
a. 1818 the first performance of “Silent Night” occurred at St. Nicolaus Church in Oberndern, Austria.
b. 1828 the Egg Nog Riot involving one third of the cadets began in the evening following a drunken party involving gallons of spirits smuggled into West Point in the North Barracks at West Point and continued into Christmas Day.
c. 1914 along portions of the Western Front the Christmas Truce began, involving hundreds of British, French and German soldiers who laid down their weapons to mingle in “No Man’s Land” fraternize, exchange small gifts and even play soccer.
d. 1955 NORAD tracked Santa Claus for the first time in the skies over the United States, starting a Christmas Eve tradition that this poet remembers very well listening to the broadcast over the radio in Petersburg, Alaska.
e. 1973 the District Home Rule Act was passed giving Washington, D.C. residents the right to elect their own local government.
Reflections on Christmas: “I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” ~Charles Dickens, noted English author and author of the Christmas Carol.
