a. 1823 President James Monroe announced the Monroe Doctrine which held that the United States would not allow foreign intervention in Latin America and would be neutral in any European conflicts.
b. 1845 President James Polk, to the dismay of our Native American population, announced that it was the “Manifest Destiny” of the United States to aggressively expand into the West.
c. 1859 John Brown was hanged for his October 16, 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
d. 1930 President Hoover in his State of the Union Address proposed a $150 million ($2.125 billion in 2015 dollars) public works program to combat The Great Depression.
e. 2001 previously high flying Enron filed for bankruptcy with its CFO sentenced to 6 years for accounting fraud and its president sentenced to 24 years for similar charges and its founder and chairman escaped prison time after being convicted of similar charges by dying before his sentencing hearing.
