5. Life’s Script Can Be Deadly—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1971 of Canadian born actor Corey Haim who had early success as a young actor but struggled with drug addiction and died of an accidental overdose of prescription medications at the early age of 38.

a. 1823 the iconic poem “The Night Before Christmas” was published anonymously but later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore.
b. 1913 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act into law, thereby creating the Federal Reserve System.
c. 1947 the transistor was first demonstrated a Bell Laboratories and the race to consumer electronics was on.
d. 1968 82 sailors from the USS Pueblo seized by North Korea in a blatant violation of international law were released after being held for 11 months in deplorable conditions.
e. 1972 16 survivors of a plane carrying a rugby union team from Uruguay enroute to a game in Chile that had crashed in the Andes 82 days earlier were rescued after two team members in hiked for 10 days over the mountains to find help. The survivors resorted to cannibalism to survive giving rise to the t-shirt logo “Rugby players eat their dead.”
