Ridley's Believe It Or Not For December 20, 2015 International Human Solidarity Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—December 20, 2015, 397 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Trust your Sunday is off to a great start and your weekend plans are set; as always, I hope you enjoy Sunday’s  holidays and observances,  a music link to Billy Paulfactoids of interest, a relevant quote from Pamela Grim, M.D., looking forward to enjoying a plate of fried shrimp, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
       1. International Human Solidarity Day—observed by the UN since 2005 to promote the eradication of poverty and promote global development.
         2. Go Caroling Day—honoring holiday tradition of visiting nursing homes, senior centers, hospitals and parties, to sing Christmas carols to the patents, residents and attendees there.
         3. 1972 Number One S ong—celebrating the number one song in 1972 on a run of three weeks in that position Me And Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul. Here is a link to Billy Paul performing Me And Mrs. Jones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45jjVZVQwLI
         4. National Fried Shrimp Day—celebrating what has to be one of the tastier ways to enjoy those tasty crustaceans especially when prepared scampi style with garlic and olive oil..
         5. Can’t Live Without Love—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1983 of Gia Allemand, model and reality show contestant who had just received a role in her first major film role but who got into an argument with her boyfriend and was told by him that he did not love her anymore leading to her suicide that evening at the age of 29 by hanging. Talk about wanting the ability to take back what a person said, especially one who was asked to check on Gia by her mother, only to find her brain dead with a vacuum cord around her neck—tragic!
On this day in:
        a. 1946 that iconic Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed was first released in New York City; good chance you will watch it on TV before Christmas.
         b. 1951 at Arco, Idaho the Experimental Breeder Reactor 1 became to the first nuclear reactor to create electricity to initially power four 200 watt light bulbs. Although designed to validate nuclear physics theory, the reactor ultimately was generating 200 kilowatts of electricity.
         c. 1971 the international aid organization Doctors Without Borders was founded by Bernard Kouchner and a group of journalists in Paris, France; tragically the organization was in the news recently when the U.S mistakenly bombed and strafed a hospital the organization was manning in Afghanistan.                                                           d. 1988 the UN Convention on the Illicit Traffic of Narcotics and Psychotropic     Drugs, banning the use of illicit drugs and allowing extradition of suspects in the absence of extradition treaties was signed; as of 2014 185 UN member states have signed the Convention but as in the case of Prohibition the flow of drugs appears not to have abated.
         e. 1989 the U.S. sent in troops to overthrow Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega; the invasion marked the first use of the stealth bomber the F-117 Nighthawk.
Reflections on how to save lives in war ravaged areas around the globe: “Here in Bosnia I had already seen several cases of rheumatic fever and a case we thought was miliary tuberculosis, diseases now rare in America. It was sobering to think that the mundane process of vaccinating these children might ultimately save more lives than any UN-brokered peace treaty.” Pamela Grim, medical doctor and author of Just Here Trying to Save a Few Lives: Tales of Life and Death from the ER
