August 7, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National Night Out Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For August 7, 2018 The candidates in a special election in Ohio are running neck and neck and could be a predictor on whether Red control of the Congress the voters in the fall will reject (Trump doubled down on the Red candidate with a campaign rally and may be up late tonight watching the vote tallies); hard left Senator Chris Murphy is demanding greater censorship by Silicon Valley tech giants of “hate speech” (sadly hate speech to him is anything that condemns leftist ideology and promotes conservative ideas and is why Twitter and Facebook should be condemned for banning conservative thinkers);  Iran effective at midnight is now subject to economic sanctions and countries doing business with Iran will be forced to chose—do business with Iran and access to American markets lose (hopefully the sanctions will tank the Iranian economy and force behavioral change of the tyrannical mullah regime); the sheriff of Pinellas County Florida site of a “stand your ground” killing in a parking lot by a white of a black has blasted Al Sharpton for appearing at a protest (having Al Sharpton appear at a race related protest is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline); Ruth Reed, a substitute teacher, who had made a vow to pick up the tab at her local coffee shop at least once a week did so for a person who was a few dollars short and that person turned out to be Keith Urban who was set to perform in Camden on Friday (no word in the story of whether out of gratitude he was going to provide Ms. Reed with a ticket to his concert); Manafort’s ex-partner Rick Gates returned to the stand for more questioning to bolster his claim that he conspired with him to commit tax and bank fraud; the West Hollywood City Council  has passed a resolution to remove Trump’s Hollywood Star after it had been vandalized; in addition for getting blasted for opening the flood gates to migrants Merkel is  being blasted for shifting from nuclear energy to more coal mostly lignite with its higher rate of carbon emissions; on the crime front police in North Carolina are looking for a gunman who at gun point robbed a 9 year old’s lemonade stand; in a very bloody weekend in Chicago through August 6, 2018 1818 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 292 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of mostly people of color by mostly people of color and when will Emanuel who has been MIA resign or be voted out of office?)
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Rick Nelson,  factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that your obstacles are more like monticles as opposed to mountains, and a relevant quote from Lois Gibbs on Love Canal, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. National Night Out Day—created in 1984 to promote community police relations and regain streets and parks from criminal activities.
 2.  Professional Speakers Day—celebrating the accomplishments of professional speakers who motivate us, inspire us, impart knowledge and in the case of Hillary Rodham Clinton provide access in exchange for speaking fees.
3. 1958 Number One Song— the number one song in 1958 on a run of 2 weeks in that position was “Poor Little Fool” by Rick Nelson. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5UDiQC3RDs
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “monticle” which means a little hill which hopefully your issues are like today, easy to climb.
5. Witch Hunter In Chief—celebrating or bemoaning depending on your political beliefs the birth on this day in 1944 of Robert Swan Mueller III whose band of angry and biased Blues have been investigating unsuccessfully the Russian Collusion Delusion while racking up over 20 million dollars in expenses.
 On this day in:
a. 1944 IBM dedicated the first program controlled calculator best known as the Harvard Mark 1.
b. 1964 Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which granted President Lyndon Johnson broad powers to prosecute the disastrous war in Vietnam due to perceived attacks on two destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin by North Vietnamese gunboats.
c. 1978 President Jimmy Carter declared a federal emergency at Love Canal, New York for toxic wastes that had been disposed there negligently; the clean up took 21 years at a cost of $400 million.

 e. 1990 the first American soldiers arrived in Saudi Arabia in preparation for the Gulf War.
Reflections on Love Canal:  “The citizens of Love Canal provided an example of how a blue-collar community with few resources can win against great odds (a multi-billion-dollar international corporation and an unresponsive government), using the power of the people in our democratic system.” Lois Gibbs, noted environmental activist and co-founder of the Love Canal Homeowner’s Association.
