Ridley’s
Believe It Or Not For August 19, 2018 On the
witch-hunt beat it was revealed that Mueller’s team has interviewed the White
House Counsel three times for over thirty hours with Trump not asserting any
privilege (so much for the myth of obstruction of justice); pro gun rights
groups in Seattle protesting a gun control initiative in Seattle brought out
counter protestors and police in riot gear (the initiative was thrown off the
ballot by a judge); at a Friday night practice football game in Wellington, Florida two adults were
targeted by 2 gunmen and shot and
wounded outside the ticket booth creating pandemonium as spectators fled for
their lives from the stadium; on the golf front at the Web.com tournament Kevin
Stadler hit an errant tee shot and in anger slammed his 7 iron into the ground
knocking off the club head which flew into the crowd hitting a spectator in the
head (a little anger management might be appropriate here); in a chilling
reminder that training for war is a dangerous occupation, the Marine who fell
overboard from the USS Essex near the
Philippines has been identified and declared dead after a five day search
failed to find his body; China’s Xi will be visiting Pyongyang for North Korea’s
70th Anniversary celebrations (one would hope that he will continue
pressure on Kim to denuclearize); the EPA will be releasing regulations that
repeal Obama era regulations that severely restricted the use of coal to
generate electricity (not much of the legacy of Obama other than a memory
of dismal economic performance remains);
on the litigation front, the Good Samaritan who was called a hero for jumping into
the water and rescuing several people from the Duck Boat capsizing in Branson
has sued the operator and the captain for claimed injuries including PTSD and
Brennan is on the airways slamming Trump for taking away his security clearance
and ranting about collusion and treasonous activity of the President (after 18
months still no evidence of collusion—he really should read Greg Jarrett’s book
on the sham investigation of Clinton and the FBI and DOJ plot to take down an
elected president Trump; Peter Strzok’s Go Fund Me account has raised over $400,000 to
be used in litigation over his firing; in Chicago while Rahm Emanuel continues
to imitate Nero playing the fiddle through
August 18, 2018 1964 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of
color, of whom 311 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or
is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind
eye to the slaughter of mostly people of color by mostly people of color and
when will Emanuel who has been MIA resign or be voted out of office?)
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to the
Lovin’ Spoonful,
factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that Trump is speaking out against the mortiferous effects of the opioid crisis and a relevant quote from Dick Morris on the Iraq War and news coverage, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. 1. National Aviation Day—created by President Roosevelt in 1939
to celebrate the development of aviation in this nation; the day was chosen as
it marked the birthday of Oroville Wright on this day in 1871.
2. World Humanitarian Day—commemorating the loss of life of those killed in the line of
duty promoting humanitarian causes and celebrated on this day as it marks the
anniversary of the death of 22 UN personnel killed in a suicide bombing on the
UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003.
3. 1966 Number One Song— the number one song in 1966 on
a run of 3 weeks in that position was “Summer In The City” by the Lovin’ Spoonful. Here
is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5bUmx-hk-c
The founder of the group Joe Butler is still going strong at 76.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “mortiferous”
which means death-bringing or fatal which describes to a tee the opioid crisis
that is swamping our nation.
5. Madame Carbon Footprint—celebrating
the birthday on this day of Tipper Gore who after 40 years of marriage to the “inventor”
of the internet Al Gore whose carbon residential footprint is probably one of
the biggest ones on the planet has split and is romantically involved with the editor
of The National Geographic (makes
sense as she is an accomplished photographer).
On
this day in:
a. 1942 Canadians,
English and 50 American Rangers landed a Dieppe, France and were successfully
repelled by the Germans in less than 6 hours with large casualties and
prisoners taken proving how difficult a landing on a defended beach could be.
b. 1964 Syncom 3, the world’s first geosynchronous
communications satellite was successfully launched by the U.S.
c. 1981
US fighter jets intercepted and shot down 2 Libyan Sukhoi 22 jets in the Gulf
of Sidra off the coast of Libya.
d. 1989
several hundred East Germans crossed the border between Austria and Hungary
during the Pan European Picnic setting in motion the events leading to the destruction
of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
e. 2010
Operation Iraqi Freedom aka the Hunt for Bogus WMD ends with the last combat
troops crossing over the border back to Kuwait.
Reflections on Iraqi Freedom and the
coverage in the network newsrooms: “The Iraq War marked the beginning of the
end of network news coverage. Viewers saw the juxtaposition of the embedded
correspondents reporting the war as it was actually unfolding and the
jaundiced, biased, negative coverage of these same events in the network
newsrooms.” Dick Morris political consultant and former campaign manager for
Clinton’s successful 1996 campaign but who has switched to becoming a
Republican in 1998.
