Ridley's Believe It Or Not—November 24, 2014: Posted Friday morning a Thanksgiving poem for your reading enjoyment which can be found on my blog: http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2014/11/thanksgiving-thoughts-end-black-friday.html Trust your weekend was a good one with your favorite pro and college football teams in the win column and more importantly that Monday is proving to be a great start on a short work week. As always I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and quotes from David Millibrand, with a smile on your sunscreened face, wondering if this is the day to enjoy some sardines, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. D.B. Cooper Day : commemorating the only unsolved U.S. airplane piracy case emanating from a hijacking on this day in 1971 on a flight from Portland to Seattle in which the hijacker obtained a $250,000 ransom and then after taking off had the ramp on a 727 lowered and parachuted into the night never to be seen again.
2. Brownie Locks Day—celebrating the simple fact that while blondes are the point of all jokes, brown haired girls are the love of most lives.
3. Influence Day—celebrating the birthday of Dale Carnegie on this day in 1886, one of the early motivational speakers and the author of How to Win Friends and Influence People.
4. Light My Fire Day—celebrating not the great line to a Rolling Stones song but rather the birthday of William Buckley, Jr. on this day in 1925, a noted conservative journalist who appeared for many years of the Firing Line.
5. National Sardines Day—if you want a great amount of protein in a tin with no mercury, packed in water, this is a great way to go.
On this day in
a. 1859 Charles Darwin published On the Origin of the Species; this day is also in some circles referred to as Evolution Day.
b. 1932 the FBI Crime Lab, the premier forensic criminal forensic facility, opened to the bane of criminals not wanting to be caught by evidence left at the scene of their crimes.
c. 1963 in the first televised live murder, Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby while being transported from the Dallas Police Station; if only he would have lived to reveal what happened on the 22nd of November.
d. 2013 Iran signed an interim agreement with the permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany to limit its nuclear weapons program in exchange for reducing sanctions---guess what today that agreement expires and Iran shows no willingness to curtail it program to acquire nuclear weapons.
Reflections on Iran’s unmitigated desire to possess nuclear weapons no matter what and the expiration of the deadline: “The two biggest threats to international security in 2013 are Iran getting a nuclear weapon, and Iran being bombed to stop it getting a nuclear weapon. Both would precipitate a long and dangerous conflict in an already unstable Middle East. Both would be a disaster.” David Millibrand, former member of the British Parliament. Not sure if bombing would produce a more unstable environment than with ISIS is already there.
