Ridley's Believe It Or Not—November 17, 2014: Trust your weekend ended on a great note and your Monday is proving to be a great one and as always I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and a quote from Shira Tamir, with a smile on your sunscreened face, looking forward to enjoying a warm slice of fresh homemade bread, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.
1. International Students Day—commemorating the closure of Czech universities by the Germans, sending off hundreds of students to concentration camps and the killing of nine students and professors on this day in 1939.
2. World Peace Day—creating awareness for the need of peace both between nations but also between the various sects and creeds within nations and within oneself.
3. Best Kept Secret Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1925 of Rock Hudson who appeared in 70 films and whose agent managed to keep his homosexuality out of the headlines. He was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to die of AIDS.
4. National Homemade Bread Day—what a better way to spend some time, kneading flour to make bread and then having one’s olfactory nerves soothed by the aroma of fresh baked homemade bread.
On this day in
a. 1777 the Articles of Confederation are submitted to the states for ratification.
b. 1800 the U.S. Congress held its first session in Washington, D.C.
c. 1869 the Suez Canal linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea was opened, making the world a much smaller place for shipping.
d. 1947 the Screen Actors Guild implemented an anti-communist oath.
Reflections on the desire for peace: “If everyone wanted peace as much as they want a new iPhone, then there would be peace.” Shira Tamir noted artist. I would take peace over an iPhone any day of the week.
