Ridley's Believe It Or Not—November 19, 2014: Trust your Hump Day, Wednesday, is going well and as always I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and quotes from President Lincoln, with a smile on your sunscreened face, looking forward to enjoying a cold soda, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. World Toilet Day—Not honoring Mr. Crapper the supposed inventor of the indoor flush toilet but a UN observance since 2001 creating awareness of the sanitary needs of 2.5 billion around the globe who do not have access to proper sanitation which spreads disease, flies and ungodly smells.
2. International Men’s Day—another UN observance first observed in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999 to promote male health and recognize positive male role models.
3. National Blow Bagpipes Day—celebrating the only wind instrument that you can play continually play and is the closest thing to the sound of a dozen cats having their tails stepped on. The pipes have been around since 1000 B.C. but did not originate in Scotland or Ireland for that matter—for me a great sound; for others definitely an acquired taste.
4. National Gettysburg Address Day—commemorating on this day in 1863 the 270 word Gettysburg Address by President Lincoln, considered one of the greatest speeches in American history.
5. National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day—celebrating the fizz, taste and jolt of all the Cokes, Pepsis, and Dr. Peppers, to name a few, consumed each year.
On this day in
a. 1955 the first issue of National Review was published by William Buckley to the delight of conservative readers.
b. 1990 pop group Milli Vanilli was stripped of its Grammy for the album Girl You Know It's True when it was learned that the duo did not sing at all; the music was provided by session musicians.
c. 1998 the beginning of the Blue Dress scandal as the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives began impeachment hearings for President Clinton.
Reflections from the author of the Gettysburg Address, just as true and relevant today as over 150 years ago.
a. “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
b. “My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.”
c. “Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow. The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the real thing.” Amazing man; one can only wonder how much better Reconstruction would have been had he not been assassinated.
