Ridley's Believe It Or Not—November 13, 2014:
Trust your Thursday is proving to be a good one as the weekend nears and as always I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and a quote from the designer of the Vietnam War Memorial, one of the most gripping memorials this poet has ever viewed, with a smile on your sunscreened face, happy that you are about to enjoy a bowl of Indian pudding, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.
1. World Kindness Day—commemorating since 1998 an idea that really should be celebrated and observed daily not just one day of the year; today show an act of kindness to a loved one or a complete stranger—the rewards you will feel will knock your socks off.
2. Sadie Hawkins Day —inspired by Al Capp’s cartoon series in the 30’s where the mayor of Dogpatch created a Sadie Hawkins race where men were given a short head start and then chased by women—definitely a day for this aging poet to leave his cane at home so he can easily be caught.
3. More Authors Fewer Lawyers Day--celebrating the birthday on this day in 1850 of Robert Lewis Stevenson, one of Scotland’s greatest authors who studied law but found a better calling—writing.
4. National Indian Pudding Day—celebrating that classic New England treat porridge topped with whipped cream and cinnamon; perfect for the cold mornings which a better part of the country is now facing with the latest “global warming” Arctic vortex.
On this day in
a. 1947 the Soviet Union completed development of the most popular assault rifle, the signature weapon for terror groups around the world, the AK 47.
b. 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated Alabama laws requiring segregated buses and thereby putting an end to the Montgomery bus boycott.
c. 1970 a tropical cyclone with 150 plus miles per hour winds hit the Ganges Delta area of Bangladesh, killing over 500,000 people, the most deadly natural disaster of all time.
d. 1982 the Vietnam War Memorial was dedicated; if you want to feel the tears flow down your face, this is a memorial you would want to go to---over 58,000 names on a black granite wall of a war we never should have fought.
Reflections on the Vietnam War Memorial from its creator: “It was a requirement of the veterans to list the 57,000 names. We are reaching a time when we will acknowledge the individual in a war on the national level.” Maya Lin
