June 9 History-Donald Duck Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 9, 2014Hope your weekend was a great one and despite the meager pickings, unless you are in Uganda enjoying All Heroes Day, you enjoy the holidays, factoids, and quote.
            1. Donald Duck Day—celebrating the appearance of one of the great Disney icons, Donald Duck appearing for the first time on this day in 1934 in the Wise Hen .
            2. Men’s Health Week—promoting an awareness of men’s health issues not the least of which is the disappointment of receiving a tie as opposed to the smart phone, tablet, fly rod or putter desired on Father’s Day
            3. APS Awareness Day—promoting an awareness of and seeking a cure for an auto immune disease you would not wish on even your worst ex-spouse –antiphospholipid syndrome (just saying it makes me want to count my blessings).
            4. National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day---celebrating a classic tasty pie although this highly evolved omnivore enjoys it made only with rhubarb.
On this day in:
            a. 1959 the nuclear submarine USS George Washington, the first submarine to carry ballistic missiles, was launched.
            b. 1973 in an eat your heart out moment for California Chrome, one of the greatest horses in history, Secretariat, won the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont.
            c. 1978 the Church of the Latter Day Saints reversed its 148 year old policy of excluding Afro-Americans from its priesthood opening up its priesthood to “all worthy men.”
Words that should still echo this day in the halls of Congress as rancor still runs deep on both sides of the aisle and of course at the White House:  "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"   Joseph Welch, special counsel for the U.S. Army on June 9, 1954 during hearings being held by Senator McCarthy on Communist Party infiltration of the Army.
