Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—June 12, 2014: Much
better day for holidays, including these two of a culinary nature. Hope you
enjoy them along with the factoids, and quote.
1. Loving Day—celebrating the 1967 U.S.
Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia
which struck the laws of 16 states which forbade interracial marriage—hard to
believe that such laws were still on the books and that it took over 100 years
after the Civil War before the laws were invalidated.
2. World
Day Against Child Labor—created by the ILO of the UN in 2002 to promote
awareness of child labor throughout the world and to curtail the practice that
dooms million of children to unsafe workplace conditions and deprives them of
an education.
3. Crowded Nest
Awareness Day—a new holiday observing
a new disturbing trend as thousands of graduates, burdened with debt have to
move back in with their parents as they cannot find a job.
4. National Jerky Day/National Peanut Butter Cookie
Day---celebrating two great tasty snacks very difficult to live without
and with respect to jerky a good reason to go backpacking into the wild given
its light weight.
On this
day in:
a. 1972 the first Popeye’s restaurant opened in Arabi, Louisiana, a suburb of
New Orleans. Great Cajun style fried chicken and famous to its Tuesday special
of a leg and a thigh for a $1.29—definitely on this highly evolved omnivore’s favorite
list.
b. 1987 President Ronald Reagan at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin publicly
challenges Soviet Premier Mikhail; Gorbachev to “tear down that wall.” The Berlin Wall came down shortly thereafter
on November 9, 1989 and shortly thereafter the Soviet Union collapsed and the
world could breathe easier as the Cold War would end.
c. 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald
Goldman were murdered outside Nicole’s Brentwood home leading to one of the
most watched trial of all times and the acquittal of O.J. Simpson, has found
that there still is justice in the world and was convicted of armed robbery and
kidnapping in Las Vegas in 2008 and sentenced to 33 years.
We are all citizens,
especially if we are free: “two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was
civis romanus sum ["I am a Roman citizen"]. Today, in the world of
freedom, the proudest boast is "Ich bin ein Berliner!"... All
free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and therefore, as a
free man, I take pride in the words "Ich
bin ein Berliner!" President John Kennedy Berlin June 26, 1963
