Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—June 18, 2014: This may not have been the
Alaskanpoet’s finest hour on finding holidays to celebrate but hope you enjoy
these meager few holidays, factoids and quote from the Bahá'í faith and a portion of Winston
Churchill’s “Finest Hour” speech delivered in the dark days of World War II
following the fall of France.
1. Autistic Pride Day—promoting awareness
and acceptance of a really difficult challenge to many families.
2. Evacuation
Day/Waterloo Day—celebrating if in Egypt the evacuation of all British
troops from Egypt in 1956 and if in an English pub celebrating the defeat of
Napoleon at Waterloo on this day in 1815--cheers.
3. International
Sushi Day—celebrating that great delicacy sushi—what better to way to
curb carbon emissions than to savor some raw seafood surrounded in rice
accompanied of course with sake.
4. International
Picnic Day—celebrating unless you are in Nebraska watching for dual
tornadoes the best way to spend an afternoon in the fresh air.
On this
day in:
a. 1940 Winston Churchill delivered one of the greatest speeches of all time
following the fall of France and the evacuation of the BEF at Dunkirk: “Hitler
knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can
stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move
forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world,
including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for,
will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more
protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace
ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and
its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.” Words can stop armies if heard by men of
bravery and character.
b. 1983 Stanford grad Sally Ride became the first American woman to orbit into
space on a Space ShuttleapcerisaA1 President Nixon declared a war of drugs,
which we have obviously lost despite jailing thousands while the cartels have
made billions.
c. 1983 in a chilling moment of intolerance
of the mullahs that rule Iran, Mona Mahmudnishad together with nine
other Bahá'í were sentenced
to death and hanged in Shiraz, Iran because of her Bahá'í Faith.
How
in heaven’s name could a religion hang someone with a philosophy like this: “Prayer need not be in words, but
rather in thought and attitude… words without love mean nothing." Abdu’l-Bahá
Just another reason why Iran should
never allowed to posses nukes.
