Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—June 11, 2014: Meager day for
holidays—enough to make one drown one’s frustrations in copious amounts of iced
tea. Hope
you enjoy the holidays, factoids, and
quote.
1. William Davis
Miners’ Memorial Day—found in honor of my Canadian mother and
celebrated in Nova Scotia to honor the coal miners who have lost their lives in
the province over the years mining coal.
2. Never
Say Nevers Day—honoring the birthday
on June 11, 1902 of Ernie Nevers, one of the great football players for
Stanford and member of the NFL Hall of Fame, the only professional football player
to score 40 points in one game.
3. Corn On The Cob Day—honoring
that All American favorite, unless you have the misfortune of wearing dentures.
4. King Kamehameha Day---celebrated in
Hawaii honoring Kamehameha the Great the king who unified the islands of Hawaii.
On this
day in:
a. 1184 B.C. a day of mourning for
Trojans on the USC campus, Troy was sacked and burned to the ground according
to calculations of Eratosthenes.
b. 1919 Sir Barton became the first of that rare group of eleven horses
to win the Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes, the last of which was
Affirmed in 1978.
c. 1935 Edwin Armstrong demonstrated FM radio at Alpine, New Jersey.
A primer
on betting at the tracks: “I know
nothing about racing and any money I put on a horse is a sort of insurance
policy to prevent it winning.” Frank Richardson
