June 30 History Ice Cream Soda Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 30, 2014:  Condolences to Mexico against the Dutch but good luck to Team U.S.A. against Belgium on July 1 in the World Cup.  Almost no holidays but with an assist from the memory of the magic of Harry Blackstone, JR. pulled these out of the hat to enjoy along with the  factoids, and quote from von Goethe with a smile on your face and an ice cream soda in your hand.
            1. Magic Day—celebrating the birthday of Harry Blackstone, Jr. a great magician and member of the Knights of the Orange County Roundtable who died way too soon at the age of 63.

           3. Leap Second Adjustment Day—marking the semiannual adjustment to the atomic clock by adding or subtracting one second to enable us to keep perfect time; so if you are one second late today you have an excused.
           4. National Ice Cream Soda Day—celebrating that great summer drink that brings all of us back to our childhood days.
On this day in:
a.      1957 the first of the really iconic sports cars, the Chevy Corvette rolled off the assembly     line.

Do you believe in Magic?: “Magic is believing in yourself; if you can do that, anything is possible.” T here is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, noted 18-19th Century writer and poet

June 29 History National Camera Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 29, 2014:  Good luck to Team U.S.A. against Belgium on July 1 in the World Cup.  Slim pickings for holidays but hope you enjoy these holidays, factoids, and quote from Ansel Adams with a smile on your face and a delicious covered waffle on your plate.
            1. Slim Pickens Day—commiserating not the lack of appropriate holidays to celebrate but rather the birthday of a great actor Slim Pickens on this day in 1919, forever memorialized as the B-52 pilot riding a hydrogen bomb into the Soviet Union in Dr. Strangelove.
            2. National Camera Day--celebrating one of society’s indispensable tools and with cell phones being cameras the possibilities of being caught on candid camera are endless.
           3. Waffle Iron Day—honoring that essential tool of any kitchen especially one with children present—topped with strawberries and cream, great way to start breakfast. Not sure why today is the day as Cornelius Swarthout received a patent for the waffle iron on August 24, 1869.
           4. National Almond Butterscotch Day—celebrating that great crunchy candy best known as Almond Roca in the markets since invented in 1912.

June 28 History National Ceviche Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 28, 2014:  Good luck to Team U.S.A. against Belgium on July 1 in the World Cup.  Wear your best shades today and enjoy these holidays, factoids, and quote from the Daphne Fielding with a smile on your face and a thick tortilla chip in your hand to scoop up some ceviche.
            1. INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY—created by Derek Arnold in Iowa on this day in 2000  as a parody protesting people who in an attempt to promote the importance of themselves in emails use ALL CAPS.
            2. My Way Or The Elway Day—celebrating the birthday of one of Stanford’s great quarterbacks along with Plunkett and Luck, two time Super Bowl winner, John Elway—one of the strongest arms of any quarterback to play the game but doomed to play in his last collegiate game against Cal which after Elway drove Stanford to a last seconds apparent comeback win produced a loss in The Play.
           3. Paul Bunyan Day—honoring that mythical creator of American logging—whenever you see rain in the forests it is most likely being caused by his tears due to the bureaucrats and the Endangered Species Act which has decimated logging in large parts of this country.
           4. National Tapioca Day—celebrating that great gluten free pudding extracted from cassava (native Brazil- site of the World Cup).
           5. National Ceviche Day—celebrating a great dish, fresh fish marinated in lime or lemon with added spices and finely chopped vegetables like onions and tomatoes—a cooling dish like gazpacho without the liquid—Enjoy!
On this day in:
            a. 1969 the Stonewall Riots began in New York City, a event which heralded the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement in this country.
            b. 1987 in the first time in military history a civilian population was targeted for chemical attack when Iraqi warplanes under the command of Saddam  Hussein bombed the Iranian town of Sardasht—the skilled gained was later put to use in his own county.
            c. 1997 in a precursor to a World Cup moment of biting, Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting off a portion of Evander Holyfield’s ear in the third round of their heavyweight championship fight.
A rational view from a horse’s perspective: “It doesn't matter what you do in the bedroom as long as you don't do it in the street and frighten the horses.” Daphne Fielding, noted 20th Century British author Since we have few carriages in the streets an addendum would be “or cause a driver to swerve off the road.” But the thought is right.

June 27 History Hellen Keller Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 27, 2014:  Kudos to Team U.S.A. who by losing by one goal still advanced in the World Cup.  Wear your best shades today and enjoy these holidays, factoids, and quotes from the Helen Keller with a smile on your face and an Orange Blossom water drink in your hand.
            1. Hellen Keller Day—celebrating the birth of one very remarkable woman who overcame deafness and blindness at the age of 7 to become a noted author and activist whose story was immortalized in the film The Miracle Worker.
            2. National HIV Test Day—promoting those who may have been at risk to take the HIV test; you cannot stop the spread of a hidden killer without knowing whether you carry the virus.
           3. National Sunglasses Day—honoring that iconic eye wear originating in China in the 14th Century for judges to hide their eye expressions during trial and today not only fashionable but to prevent cataracts from exposure to the Sun.
           4. National Orange Blossoms Day—celebrating that delicate and fragrant flower that is used to create orange blossom water which is a great drink on a hot summer day. As a special treat for Friday a note that Saturday is National Ceviche Day which honors and promotes a dish that is one of my favorites.
On this day in:
            a. 1950 with North Koreans approaching Seoul, President Truman without hesitation or need for studies ordered U.S. forces to commence operations in Korea in the Korean War.
            b. 1967 the first ATM machine was installed in Enfield, a suburb of London by Barclays Bank—how did we humans ever survive without this device for so long.
            c. 1985 in an end of an era moment, U.S. Route 66 was removed from the registry of U.S. Highways.
From the vision of Helen Keller:
“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but no vision.”
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart
“There is no better way to thank God for your sight than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark.”
