Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History National Crabmeat Day-March 9, 2014

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--March 9, 2014:  Another day in the creeping shadows of St. Patrick's Day.  Found these worthy holidays and due to popular demand in the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth, Aliy Zirkle, is still in the lead, a tough woman indeed, mushing out Shaktoolik, AK population 199 and 754 miles from the start, with a 48 minute lead over Jeff King.  The early leader 64 year old "Sonny" Lindner is in 4th place less than two hours behind with the 2013 winner Mitch Seavey in 7th 3hrs 42 mins. behind her and behind his son by 16 mins.   Another update tomorrow on Ridley's Believe It Or Not.  Hope you enjoy the holidays, factoids and quote for the day.
           1. National Crabmeat Day--celebrated today so we can watch “The Deadliest Catch,”  with those insane fools risking life and limb in the Bering Sea to bring King Crab to our tables and raise our cholesterol.
           2. Check Your Batteries Day--if that battery-driven clock seems an hour slow, it’s only because you forgot to set it an hour ahead before going to bed to start daylight savings.
           3. Joe Franklin Day--honoring that great pioneer of radio and television, the self-proclaimed "King of Entertainment" who pioneered the talk show format with over 28,000 episodes of the "Joe Franklin Show."
           4. American Crossword Puzzle Weekend (8-9)--last day to enjoy one of the few remaining reasons to buy or subscribe a newspaper--Sunday crossword. Absolutely a great way to keep the growth of dementia in check!
           On this day in:
              a. 1958 Barbie made her first appearance to become the highest selling doll in history with over 800 million sold.
              b. 1964 the U.S. Supreme Court in Sullivan v. The New York Times  ruled that public officials had to prove malice to prevail in a libel or slander case.
              c. 1976 female cadets were admitted to West Point Military Academy.
Courage? Thy name is Iditarod: "I thought I had totally broken it. It made such a loud pop. It just knocked me off the sled and passed me out. Obviously, I am wimpy. I couldn't handle the pain and passed out." - Four-time Iditarod winner Martin Buser, the first to the Yukon River in this year's race, on hitting his knee on a tussock and trailing Aliy Zirkle.
