Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-March 8, 2014 International Women's Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--March 8, 2014:  Another day in the creeping shadows of St. Patrick's Day.  Found these worthy holidays and due to popular demand in the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth, as should be appropriate on this International Women's Day, Aliy Zirkle, is still in the lead, a tough woman indeed, mushing out of -20 degree weather into Kaltag checkpoint  (the high point for Cindy Abbot of Irvine last year--www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com) and not stopping other than to have vets clear her dogs, now trailed by Steve Busher by over 2 hours. Another update tomorrow on Ridley's Believe It Or Not.  Hope you enjoy the holidays, factoids and quote for the day.
           1. International Women's Day--celebrated today to promote gender equality for women and a national holiday in many countries, but given the feudal oppression of jihadists like the Taliban, should be celebrated every day.
           2. National Proofreading Day-- given the rise of spellcheck and autocorrect, it shoutd be a day of mourning over the demise of proofreading not its observance.
           3. National Fanny Pack Day--great thing to wear if jogging and need to stop for a meal and pay for it with a credit card.
           4. National Unplugging Day (7-8)--last day to slow down the hectic world by unplugging from technology; talk don't text; write don't autotext; exercise for real not virtual; go outside and smell the greenery not into a virtual world; and the list goes on. A chance to wear your designer fanny pack and try out what proofreading skills you still have left.
           On this day in:
              a. 1934, in a defining "we are not alone moment" Edwin Hubble's photo of the cosmos shows for the first time that there are as many galaxies as there are stars in the Milky Way
              b. 1979 Phillips demonstrated the compact disc for the first time.
             c. 1983 President Ronald Reagan designated the Soviet Union as the "evil empire" which, Putin by his actions in Ukraine is proving to Obama and the failed reset, is alive and well and growing bolder.
The secret of why jihadists are both cowards and pussies: "“Men and boys, we show our manhood through the way we treat our women. Our wives, our sisters, our mothers.” -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu How true today and on the other 364 days of the year as they wage a real War on Women.
