1. Dr. Seuss' Birthday Read Across America Day--celebrating a great poet's birthday, whose poems have been loved by children for decades, immortalized by Sen. Ted Cruz reading "Green Eggs and Ham" during his filibuster on the government shutdown in 2013 or in 1951 by the Alaskanpoet reciting "Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose" in a Moose Club talent contest at the young age of 4, and a day of reading across America.
2. Academy Awards Night--celebrating the awarding of the Oscars and faux modesty in the acceptance speeches; at least the Oscar for special effects for monsoon downpours will not be awarded as there is only a 10% chance of rain tonight--hope your favorites win.
3. Losar-- Tibetan Buddhist New Year and for those living in Tibet the start of another year of oppression by China.
4. Namesake Day --observing a day to explore the roots of your name and ancestry; who knows you might discover a link to a family of wealth with you as a long lost heir.
On this day in:
a. 1871 Claude Chappe demonstrated the precursor to the telegraph, the first machine operated semaphore sending the message: “si vous réussissez, vous serez bientôt couverts de gloire” (If you succeed, you will soon bask in glory) between Brulon and Paris, a distance of 16 kilometers--great idea if no fog.
b. 1836 Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
c. 1983 the first compact discs and players developed by Sony and Phillips were introduced for sale outside Japan in the U.S. and other markets driving a nail into the coffin for vinyl LPs only to see that the announcement of the death of that media was premature and sales are now increasing as CDs are on the decline--time to check the attic to see if you still have any records.
Reading is like a lifetime EuRail Pass or 10,000,000 airline miles to redeem daily: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go." Dr. Seuss Most if not all of those places will be better than those where you now may be and not reading.
