Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-Peace Corps Day, Iditerod Race Day March 1, 2014

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--March 1, 2014:  As California is finally enjoying some rain from Winter Storm Titan and to the east the rest of the country braces for yet another wave of freezing cold and snow as Titan moves out of California, I hope you take the time to email your cable or satellite provider to televise some of the Iditarod Race which mushed off from Anchorage at 10:00 A.M. in 24 degree temperatures. Hope you enjoy the holidays, factoids and quote for the day and are relishing the much needed rain in California:
           1. Iditarod Race Day--celebrating the start of The Last Great Race, the Iditarod from Anchorage to Nome, one thousand miles over ice and snow in subfreezing weather, the last true test of human and dog versus Mother Nature.
           2. National Pig Day--not celebrating the proclivity of our elected officials to load up every bill with massive amounts of pork, but to honor the actual pig, one of the more intelligent animals. If a pig and able to view what is going on in D.C., I would be insulted over politicians defamation of my good name--"pork".
          3. World Endometriosis Day (Wear Yellow Day)--creating awareness of and appeal for more research on a very painful and debilitating disease affecting close to 200 million women worldwide.
         4. End Discrimination Day --first observed this year pursuant to proclamation of UN calling for an end to discrimination against those suffering from AIDS.
         On this day in:
              a. 1871 the Articles of Confederation were ratified by the 13 former colonies, later replaced by the forming of the United States created by the ratification of the  U.S. Constitution.
              b. 1961 by executive order President JFK created the Peace Corps, still in existence and has provided over 200,000 volunteers to 139 countries, including the U.S., and is still going strong today.
              c. 2006 Wikipedia publishes its 1,000,000th article on of all things the Jordan Hill Railway Station in Scotland--knowledge dissemination is a great thing spreading much faster than we mere humans can process, digest and then rationally act on, but at least it is there.
As we shrink our military to dangerous levels, have used up our quota of Obama Red Lines, and retreat into the military equivalent of Fort America, maybe a better way to promote peace even with the Putins of the world: "There are better ways we can transform this virulent hatred - by living our ideals, the Peace Corps, exchange students, teachers, exporting our music, poetry, blue jeans." Helen Thomas, author and senior member of the White House Press Corps who died last year after 50 years of making Presidents, bureaucrats and members of Congress quake in the shoes, especially when trying to deceive us.
