Ridley's Believe It Or Not-March 4, 2014 National Grammar Day-This Day In HistoryT3

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--March 4, 2014:  Another day in the creeping shadows of St. Patrick's Day almost getting skunked but with great effort found these holidays.  Hope you enjoy the holidays, factoids and quote for the day and are working on your grammar. If you have not done so given what happened on this day in 1918, a flu shot might not be a bad idea.
          1. National Grammar Day--with the growth of autocorrect and spell check coupled with the failings of our public school this is a day needed more than ever to promote good grammar.
           2. National Pancake Day--here is a holiday you can sink your teeth into, especially if at IHop where they are adding free pancakes to any order--don't forget the maple syrup!
           3. Old Inauguration Day-- last celebrated on March 4, 1933 when FDR, like all previous Presidents before the adoption of the XXth Amendment, was sworn in as President.
          4. Hug A GI Day --not to celebrate the end of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" but to show appreciation for the men and women serving our country in uniform; handshakes will do well also.
         On this day in:
              a. 1918 the first case of the Spanish flu was announced, starting a worldwide pandemic that killed over 20 million people, devastating whole communities.  This was a pandemic that makes our flu season today look like the proverbial sneeze in the park.
              b. 1985 the FDA approved a test in blood to detect the presence of the HIV Virus; it has been used ever since to insure the safety of donated blood here in the U.S.
              c. 1998 the Supreme Court in Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services ruled that federal laws prohibiting sexual harassment at the workplace applied to workers of the same sex.                   Why investors listen to Warren Buffet's longer term views: "In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497." Into the 21st add an inept President, gridlock, government shutdown, Obamacare, and lately the crisis in Ukraine and it's still another 500 points higher.
