Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History March 17, 2014 St. Patrick's Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--March 17, 2014Erin Go Bragh; it is St. Patrick's Day. Kudos to an improbable upset by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the WAC finals this Saturday; as the only team in the Dance with a losing record, if they beat Texas Southern, they will have the difficult task of playing unbeaten Wichita State in the first round. Stanford who was torched by UCLA meets New Mexico State and if fortunate enough to win will face the winner of Number 2 seed Kansas and Eastern Kentucky game. Hope you are wearing your best green and the corned beef and cabbage is cooking slowly in the Crock Pot.
            On this day in:
              a. 1762 in New York, the first St. Patrick's Day Parade occurred.
              b. 1776 due to cannons overlooking the city, the British evacuated Boston.
              c. 1780 General Washington grants the Continental Army and its large number of Irish volunteers a holiday to observe solidarity with the Irish also fighting for their independence.
              d. 1972 in protest to "Bloody Sunday" in Northern Ireland,  some St. Patrick's Day Parade marchers wore black armbands and carried a coffin draped with the Irish Flag.
A nice thought on St. Patrick's Day:  May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.
—Irish prayer
