October 2, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not World No Alcohol Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For October 2, 2018 Although the odds favor that regardless of what the FBI report states, the Blues will attack it as not being thorough enough or complete enough, Schumer is demanding a full briefing at least 24 hours prior to the vote on Kavanaugh; Swetnick’s credibility has been totally debunked after her interview with NBC (what kind of credible witness goes to nine gang rape parties before being raped herself on the 10th visit without contacting law enforcement); Ocasio-Cortez, trying to remain relevant, claimed in a speech at Boston University that Kavanaugh committed perjury in his testimony before Congress; on the political corruption front Blue Illinois gubernatorial candidate JB Pritsker has been charged by the Illinois Inspector General of improperly receiving more that $330,000 of property tax breaks; in a picture is worth a 1000 words moment, 4 dentists charged with rape while in Las Vegas have had the charges dropped after presenting a cell phone video showing that the allegations were completely fabricated; in an enough is enough moment Georgetown professor Fair who tweeted a call for GOP Senators on the Judiciary Committee to be subject to a miserable death followed by castration has had her Twitter account suspended (too bad Georgetown defended her as opposed to firing her tenure notwithstanding); Melania Trump is on a solo trip to Africa visiting 4 countries to promote child welfare and is a hit with the locals; in Chicago, Emanuel’s announcement that he will not seek reelection has not curbed the gun violence as through October 1, 2018, 2325 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 379 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of mostly people of color by mostly people of color).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Monica, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that your boat is natable and a relevant quote from District Judge George C. Pratt on Abscam, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Day of Nonviolence—created by UN General Assembly in 2007 to promote nonviolence as the preferred method to resolve disputes; the date was chosen as it marks the birthday of Gandhi.
2. World No Alcohol Day—proposed by the World Health Assembly in 2008 to promote awareness of the problems created by the abuse of alcohol and the preventable deaths caused by it. The proposal was not passed but some organizations observe it.
3. 1998 Number One Song— the number one song in 1998 on a run of 5 weeks in that position was “The First Night” by Monica. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImynIRpbQLE
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day as we move from words beginning with “m” to words beginning with “n”  is “natable” which means able to float which is a great characteristic for a boat to have.
5. A Vocal Jewel—celebrating the birth on this day in 1971 of teen singing sensation Tiffany who burst on the music scene at age 15 with “I Think We Are Alone Now,” but never really matched that success with subsequent records.
    On this day in:
a. 1187 Saladin recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders after 88 years of occupation.
b. 1967 Thurgood Marshall became the first Aftrican-American to be seated as a Justice of SCOTUS.
c. 1980 after being videotaped accepting a bribe of $50,000 from undercover FBI agents as part of the agency’s Abscam investigation,  Blue Representative Michael Meyers was expelled by the House thereby becoming the first House member to be expelled since the Civil War (what is amazing is that 30 House members voted against his expulsion).
d. 1996 the Electronic Freedom of Information Act Amendments was signed by President Bill Clinton which required government agencies to create digital copies of records created after November 1, 1996 making them far more accessible to FOIA requests.
e. 2002 after a crime spree that started in 7 states in February of 2002 that left 7 people dead,  John Muhammed and Ted Malvo began the Beltway Sniper attacks which continued for three weeks leaving 10 people dead before they were caught by police. Muhammed was convicted and executed in 2009 and Malvo was convicted and sentenced to 6 consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole.
Reflections on the proper response to bribery attempts made during Abscam sting operation: “Pressler, particularly, acted as citizens have a right to expect their elected representatives to act. He showed a clear awareness of the line between proper and improper conduct, and despite his confessed need for campaign money, and despite the additional attractiveness to him of the payment offered, he nevertheless refused to cross into impropriety.”  District Judge George C. Pratt, assigned to review Abscam cases on appeal. Too bad we do not have more elected officials with the spine of Senator Pressler.
