Ridley’s Believe It Or
Not For May 1, 2017 Another day,
another day of ratcheting up of the rhetoric on North Korea as North Korea
boasts it will increase its nuclear capabilities to the maximum while we
announce a test firing of a ICBM, Trump announces he would meet with Kim Jong
Un and Congress approved a 5 month spending bill that includes the largest
increase in military spending in a decade; South and Midwest were hammered by
tornadoes and flooding that have left 14 dead; instead of rallies promoting
workers the left is urging people to skip work and march for illegal immigrants’
rights (although the five month spending bill did not provide funding for the
wall it did ramp up funding for increased border patrols); United may have
settled with the doctor who was dragged off its plane but is still in hot water
over the death of a three foot long rabbit named Simon that died while on a
flight from London to the U.S. since the airline may have tried to conceal the
cause of death by cremating what its president Munoz compared to “lost baggage”
to the outrage of pet owners everywhere; in Venezuela, that failed socialist
state, suffering from inflation that will be most likely at 1000 percent by
year’s end forced Maduro to increase the minimum wage by 60% while shelves are
bare of medicine and food with 28 people killed in protests over his policies; Puerto Rico saddled with $70
billion of public debt is facing bankruptcy if it cannot restructure its debt
load by midnight tonight (another example of failed policies of the left); as
summer approaches so approaches the Zika virus which poses a great threat to
the fetuses of any pregnant woman infected so watch for increased state action
to kill the mosquitoes that carry the virus; almost like a stuck
record or a remake of Groundhog Day, Chicago style, the carnage in
Chicago continues unabated with total shootings in 2017 through April 30 increasing by 11 to 1041 and the
death toll increasing by 2 to 183 (God help those poor minorities being shot
mostly by minorities when the weather gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets
really better and there is more daylight to find and shoot victims) and yet
nothing, absolutely nothing, appears to be occurring to address this blight on
blacks and minorities which is what racism from a black mayor really looks like
who appears to care only about the rights of illegal aliens in his sanctuary
city (when will Chicago residents through the city council try to impeach
this pathetic, inept mayor who seems not to care that 90 percent of the homicides
occurring in his city do not result in
an arrest ?).

1. International Workers’ Day—celebrated
as a national holiday in many parts of Europe to promote appreciation of the
working class and the promotion of failed socialist ideals but in the U.S.
today a day to march and protest for immigrant rights.
2. Law Day—celebrated
in the U.S. as a counterpoint to International Workers’ Day to promote the rule
of law (ironic that after 8 years we finally have a president committed to the
rule of law as opposed to a president whose goal was to enforce only those laws
he agreed with).
3. 2003 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 2003 on
a run of 9 weeks in that position “In Da Club” by 50 Cent. Here is a recording

4. Word
of the Day—today’s word of the day is “shallop” which is a light sailing
boat used in coastal fishing or as a tender for other fishing boats.
5. Blues
Better Than Black and Blue—celebrating the birth on this day in
1930 of Marion Walter Jacobs better known to his fans as Little Walter, a
harmonica virtuoso and blues singer in Chicago but hampered by alcoholism and a
really bad temper which resulted in his death from a street fight on

a. 1956 to the relief
and joy of parents fearful of their children being confined to an iron lung,
the polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk was made available to the public.
b. 1961 Fidel Castro
proclaimed Cuba to be a socialist nation and abolished elections, condemning
the nation to the economic stagnation during his rule.
c. 1971 Amtrak took over
the operation of U.S. passenger rail service but not the rails themselves which
is why routes that would make money hand over fist like Los Angeles to Las Vegas
or Los Angeles to Phoenix do not exist.
d. 1978 Naomi Uemura, a
Japanese adventurer who excelled in sole feats like climbing Mr. Denali or
rafting the Amazon River, traveling by dog sled became the first human being to
reach the North Pole solo. He disappeared while climbing down from the peak of Mt.
Denali in February of 1984 and his body was never found although much of his
gear was.
e. 2003 in a not so fast
moment President Bush aboard the USS
Abraham Lincoln gave his “Mission Accomplished” speech announcing that
major combat operations in Iraq have ended; we are back after Obama turned tail
and ran allowing ISIS to enter and declare a caliphate.
