Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For April 19, 2017 Despite raising $8
million in contributions from leftist carpetbaggers Jon Ossoff failed to get a
majority and will face a unified Republican party behind Karen Handel in the
runoff (maybe this neophyte with almost no experience in the real world should
have moved into the district before he ran); another radical Islamist terror
attack in Fresno by Kori Muhammad who in a shooting spree of 90 seconds while yelling
Allahu Akbar killed three whites and wounded one; on the sports front Aaron Hernandez
who was just acquitted of a double murder but serving a life sentence for
another murder committed suicide in his cell and four members of the New
England Patriots are boycotting the team’s meeting with President Trump (maybe
a name change to “Beaners” or “Lobstermen” would be appropriate); Sabers still
rattling in North Korea with a movie being shown of North Korean missiles striking
the U.S. and erupting into mushroom clouds as Pence aboard the USS Ronald Reagan visiting in Tokyo
warns again in no uncertain terms that North Korean use of nuclear or conventional
weapons will be met with overwhelming force; Trump signs another executive
order promoting federal agencies to buy American and curbing abuses in the H-1
Visa program; time for all Red voters to call on Speaker Ryan to call the
troops back and dump the summer recess until we get what Trump campaigned on—reduction
in the corporate and individual tax rates along with a tax holiday to repatriate
overseas earnings; almost like a stuck record or a remake of Groundhog
Day, Chicago style, the carnage in Chicago continues unabated with total
shootings in 2017 through April 18 increasing by 15 to 943 and the death toll increasing
by two to 163 (God help those poor minorities being shot mostly by minorities
when the weather gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets really better and there
is more daylight to find and shoot victims) and yet nothing, absolutely
nothing, appears to be occurring to address this blight on blacks and
minorities which is what racism from a black mayor really looks like who
appears to care only about the rights of illegal aliens in his sanctuary
city (when will Chicago residents through the city council try to impeach
this pathetic, inept mayor?).
As always, I hope you enjoy
today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Wilson Phillips, factoids of
interest for this day in history, a relevant quote from Jayne Mansfield, hoping
that there are no exequies on your calendar, secure
in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events
like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet
can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great
price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me
for details.
1. Bicycle Day—celebrating not another green observance to encourage commuting
by bicycle but rather to commemorate this day in 1943 when Alfred Hoffman who synthesized
LSD purposely ingested .25 milligrams of the acid and rode a bicycle home with
his lab assistant after experiencing hallucinogenic effects which continued
during the ride (must have been quite a trip).
2. Dutch-American Friendship Day—commemorating
this day in 1782 when John Adams was received as the Ambassador from the United
States and the purchase in The Hague of the building that was to become our
first Embassy.
3. 1991 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1991 on a run of 1 week in that position “You’re in Love” by Wilson
Phillips. Here is a recording of the group performing the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7gYii2unkg
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “exequies” which means funeral rites
which is something hopefully you are not attending today or in the near future.
5. Driving Can Be Hazardous—celebrating the birth on this day in 1933 of Vera Jayne Palmer
better known to her fans as Jayne Mansfield, noted Playmate, sex symbol and
actress of the 50’s and 60’s who was killed instantly in a car crash at the age
of 34 but her three children sleeping in the back seat were not seriously
injured much like when her father died of a heart attack while driving a car
she and her mother were in.
On this day
in:
a. 1927 Actress Mae West was sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity
for performing in the play Sex.
b. 1960 massive student nationwide
pro democracy demonstrations against President Rhee of South Korea over
election fraud erupted in South Korea which resulted in his resignation 7 days
later.
c. 1987 the Simpsons first
appeared as a series of shorts on The
Tracy Ullman Show.
d. 1993 the 51 day siege of the Branch Davidian Compound outside
of Waco, Texas the FBI and ATF ended after fire broke out and burned the place
to the ground killing 76 people, including the sect’s founder David Keresh.
e. 2011 after 50 years of dictatorship, Fidel Castro resigned as
First Secretary of the Communist Party turning the office over to his brother
Raul.
Reflections
on success and how to achieve it: “I don't really think I
am the most beautiful woman in the world at all. If I can create some illusion
to that effect, and it seems I have, then that is what spells success to me.”
