Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For April 12, 2017 In another display that Russia may respect our current president when it did not with respect to the former feckless occupant of the White House, Putin met with Tillerson for almost two hours on the issue of what to do with Assad (we are very far apart and Russia shows no signs of compromise in removing that thug); China has turned back ships from North Korea bringing coal and instead will purchase American coal (the fat mad man of North Korea Kim Jong-un should be getting very nervous that his days are numbered); the serial liar Susan Rice continues to be in the news as Congress is expanding its probe of the unmasking of persons beyond merely Trump and his transition team to include members of Congress and other candidates (when a government obsessed with ends justify the means and a politicized DOJ headed up by Holder and Lynch start spying on Red politicians and their supporters we all should be outraged and demand a grand jury investigation to see what laws were broken); in yet another example of the corruption of the academic left that is trying to destroy the Trump Presidency, a professor at Fresno State Lars Maischak is tweeting to urge hanging of President Trump to save our democracy (it is really time to chill out and take away the dog whistles from the idiots that are teaching our kids in college and fire the likes of Maischak); in a real oops moment after the video of a doctor with a bloody face being dragged off a United Airlines plane to make room for four UA employees PR Week must be eating crow for awarding Oscar Munoz the Communicator of the Year Award just a few weeks prior to the incident after seeing his pathetic initial response to the incident; another scumbag illegal from Mexico who had been deported before has been charged with sexually abusing a 12 year old girl at a daycare facility operated by his girl friend in Fairfax County, Virginia; almost like a stuck record or a remake of Groundhog Day, Chicago style, the carnage in Chicago continues unabated with total shootings in 2017 through April 11 increasing by 12 to 843 but fortunately the death toll stuck at 155 (God help those poor minorities being shot mostly by minorities when the weather gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets really better and there is more daylight to find and shoot victims) and yet nothing, absolutely nothing, appears to be occurring to address this blight on blacks and minorities which is what racism from a black mayor really looks like who appears to care only about the rights of illegal aliens in his sanctuary city (when will Chicago residents through the city council try to impeach this pathetic, inept mayor?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to USA for Africa and the Kingsmen, factoids of interest for this day in history, a relevant quote from Joseph B. Wirthlin, vowing today to avoid being a winebibbler, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Halifax Day—commemorating in Halifax, North Carolina the execution of the Halifax Resolves on this day in 1776 which was the first official action by any of the colonies to advocate independence from Great Britain (our Declaration of Independence followed within three months).
2. International Day of Human Space Flight—celebrating the first human space flight by Yuri Gargarin on this day in 1961 and celebrated as UN observance since 2011.
3. 1985 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1985 on a run of 4 weeks in that position “We Are the World” by USA for Africa. Here is a recording of the impromptu ad hoc group of some of the most famous names in music recording the song to raise money for famine relief in Africa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9BNoNFKCBI
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “winebibber” which means a habitual drinker of alcohol.
5. Tiptoes and Tulips Are Not Eternal—honoring the birth on this day in 1932 of Herbert Khaury better known to his fans as Tiny Tim and his high pitched falsetto voice. He died way too early from a heart attack doing what he liked to do--singing before an audience of fans at the early age of 64.
On this day in:
a. 1861 the Civil War began with the Confederate forces opening fire with cannon on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor South Carolina.
b. 1945 with the end of the war against Germany almost at an end, President Franklin Roosevelt died and Vice President Harry Truman was sworn without any idea of the existence of the Manhattan Project.
c. 1955 the vaccine for polio developed by Dr. Jonas Salk was declared safe and approved for use against polio.
d. 1981 the first launch of a Space Shuttle (Columbia) took place from Cape Kennedy.
e. 1999 President Bill Clinton was found to be in contempt of court for making intentionally false statements in the sexual harassment suit brought by Paula Jones, fined and disbarred.
Reflections on the polio:“We are ever on the threshold of new journeys and new discoveries. Can you imagine the excitement of the Wright brothers on the morning of that first flight? The anticipation of Jonas Salk as he analyzed the data that demonstrated a way to prevent polio?” Joseph B. Wirthlin, American businessman and former leader of the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
