Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For April 15, 2017 The violence in
Syria goes on without let up as a suicide car bomber detonated his van along the
road side as a convoy of evacuees was passing by killing 45 innocents; final
day of campaigning in Turkey on a referendum on whether to change to an
executive presidency that could keep Erdogan in power until 2029; a déjà vu of
anti-Trump marches planned in 150 cities to protest his failure to provide copies
of his tax returns (do we really care anymore?); U.S. has a new sheriff and
that fact was demonstrated in Afghanistan as the commander there without having to follow the timid micromanagement of
Obama saw an opportunity to kill a host of ISIS fanatics and dropped a MOAB
(21,000 pounds of explosives) on them on provoking the wrath of mega leftists
like Warren even as former Obama staffers are going public with opinions that
Obama’s feckless policies in Syria, South China Sea and Ukraine have left the
world as a far more dangerous place http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/04/14/ex-obama-officials-say-hesitation-to-use-force-in-syria-elsewhere-emboldened-adversaries.html; as Christians prepare to celebrate Easter,
chilling news of the rise of persecution of Christians around the world and
fears that the religion may not survive in its birthplace; if you want to read
something that will absolutely bring tears rolling down your cheeks read this Facebook
post by a mother’s last moments with a four year old who died of cancer in her
arms http://www.foxnews.com/health/2017/04/14/love-mommy-heartbroken-mother-shares-4-year-old-sons-final-moments-cancer-battle.html; on the sports front
Hernandez was found not guilty of murder; almost
like a stuck record or a remake of Groundhog Day, Chicago style, the
carnage in Chicago continues unabated with total shootings in 2017 through
April 14 increasing by 6 to 879 and the death toll still standing at 158 (God
help those poor minorities being shot mostly by minorities when the weather
gets warmer and the shooters’ aim gets really better and there is more daylight
to find and shoot victims) and yet nothing, absolutely nothing, appears to be
occurring to address this blight on blacks and minorities which is what racism
from a black mayor really looks like who appears to care only about the rights
of illegal aliens in his sanctuary city (when will Chicago residents
through the city council try to impeach this pathetic, inept mayor?).
As always, I hope you enjoy
today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Aretha Franklin and George Michael, factoids of interest
for this day in history, a relevant quote from Princess Diana, hoping on this
Easter Eve you are free of an afreet attack, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that
the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great
price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me
for details.
1. World Art Day—the UN may be powerless to stop slaughter of Christians by
radical Islam or women and children by Assad, but when it comes to holidays and
observances it is on the front lines to since 2012 celebrate and honor the
contributions of art to our culture.
2. Jackie Robinson Day—commemorating
the breaking of the ban on blacks playing in Major League Baseball when a a
visionary Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers
on this day in 1947.
3. 1987 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1987 on a run of 2 weeks in that position “I Knew You Were
Waiting for Me” by Aretha Franklin and George Michael. Here is a recording of duo
performing the song:
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “afreet” which refers to a powerful demon in Muslim
mythology which is what the ISIS fighters in Afghanistan must have thought hit
them when the MOAB was dropped on them.
5. Cameras on the Rich and
Famous Can Be a Death Sentence—honoring the birth
on this day in 1955 of Dodi Fayed who was speeding away from paparazzi in a Paris
tunnel with Princess Diana was killed along with her at a far too early age.
On this day
in:
a. 1755 Samuel Johnson’s A
Dictionary of the English Language was published in London.
b. 1861 President
Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to fight against the Confederacy.
c. 1912 RMS Titanic sank
in the early morning hours after hitting an ice berg the just before midnight
on the 14th taking all but 710 of its passengers and crew to Davy
Jones Locker because of a shortage of lifeboats because the ship was supposed
to be “unsinkable.”
d. 1923 insulin became available to treat people suffering from
diabetes.
e. 2013 in a grim reminder that radical Islam was alive and well
on American soil, two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon,
killing three and wounding 264. One perpetrator was later killed in a shootout
with police and his brother was caught, tried, convicted and sentenced to death
but will probably spend years before he is executed which is a sad comment on
the state of our justice system when it comes to the death penalty.
Reflections on a pathetic husband who hopefully will never become
the King of England when that proud nation has an incredible Prince William and
an unbelievable wife Kate Middleton:“What must it be like for a little boy to
read that daddy never loved mummy?” Princess Diana Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you
