Ridley's Believe It Or Not For March 2, 2016 Read Across America Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 2, 2016. Unfortunately in this leap year, still 324 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately only 3 days until the start of and my daily updates on the Iditarod, the Last Great Race on Earth. Interesting theater yesterday as Clinton and Trump won a large majority of the 11 states holding elections. For Trump the fat lady has probably sung and barring a bombshell to quote Romney, he should be unstoppable and Hillary barring an indictment now looks unstoppable. The theater will get even more interesting in the fall.  I trust your Wednesday is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Whitney Houston, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from Cookie Mueller while looking forward to enjoying a slice of banana crème pie, eaten not tossed, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Read Across America Dayan observance created by the National Education Association to promote reading and celebrated on the birthday of Dr. Seuss. If you have children or grandchildren today would be a great day to remind them to stop texting and start reading or if really young read a book to them.
2. World Math Day—an on line global math competition for elementary and high school students started in 2007 with over 5 million contestants. Given the decline in math in our public schools, I suspect that Americans compared to the rest of the world fared poorly.
3. 1991 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1991 on a run of two weeks in that position All the Man That I Need by Whitney Houston, one of the great singing voices of all time who sadly is no longer with us. Here is a link to Whitney Houston performing All the Man That I Need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WH1Ma50QUk
4. National Banana Crème Pie Day—celebrating Soupy Sales’ most favorite pie although better to eat it than toss it into someone’s face.
5. Hippy Life Style Is Not Without Riskcelebrating the birthday on this day in 1949 of underground actress and writer Cookie Mueller who sadly died at the age of 40 from AIDS.
On this day in:
a. 1791 the first semaphore (optical telegraph) was installed in Paris, which greatly facilitated communications over long distances.
b. 1807 the United States barred the importation of slaves into this nation.
c. 1901 United States Steel Corporation was formed by the merger of Carnegie Steel Corporation and Federal Steel Corporation to become the first company to have a market cap of over $1 billion but is having a very difficult time in the marketplace and stock market today.
d. 1962 Wilt Chamberlain playing for the Philadelphia Warriors set the record for the most points scored in an NBA basketball game 100 points, including making 28 out of 32 free throw attempts.
e. 1983 to the delight of music fans compact discs and players were introduced into the U.S. for the first time after being available in Japan.                                                     Reflections on death from the elegy of Cookie Mueller: “Fortunately I am not the first person to tell you that you will never die. You simply lose your body. You will be the same except you won't have to worry about rent or mortgages or fashionable clothes. You will be released from sexual obsessions. You will not have drug addictions. You will not need alcohol. You will not have to worry about cellulite or cigarettes or cancer or AIDS or venereal disease. You will be free." Interesting perception that all of us will have to face sooner or later in our time on this planet.
