March 18, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National Sleep Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For March 19, 2016. Unfortunately still 308 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term but fortunately March Madness began yesterday for both men and women, including the Stanford women who play San Francisco tonight at 9:00 p.m.—go Cardinal!  Although the Iditarod has been won, once again by Dallas Seavey for the fourth time in five years, there are still 9 mushers on the course spread out over 175 miles so I will continue to post updates and photos on www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com until the Red Lantern winner crosses the finish line in Nome. Great political theater as the Republican Party is on the verge of imploding as talk of a brokered convention and a third party is running rampant and Hillary still faces a possible FBI referral to the DOJ for criminal prosecution.  I trust your Friday is proving to be a great one; and as always, I hope  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Jimmy Dorsey, factoids of interest, a  relevant quote from President Lazaro Cardenas while looking forward to enjoying some oatmeal cookies, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. World Sleep Daycelebrated since 2008 to create awareness of sleeping disorders like apnea and insomnia that raise havoc on a sufferer’s life.
2. National Biodiesel Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1858 of Rudolph Diesel famous for the invention of the diesel engine and a pioneer in the use of renewable fuels like vegetable oil for it.
3. 1944 Number One Song—heading back in time to flee from rap music to celebrate the number one song in 1944 on a  run of seven weeks in that position Besame Mucho by Jimmy Dorsey. Here is a link to Jimmy Dorsey performing  Besame Mucho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmTKkKeznzU
4. National Oatmeal Cookie Day—celebrating another great cookie favorite.
5. True Beauty Is Color Blind—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1963 of Vanessa Williams, the first African-American Miss America who had to resign her crown a few weeks before the end of her reign due to the release of nude photographs of her by Penthouse Magazine but rebounded to have a very successful acting and singing career.
On this day in:
a. 1850 American Express was founded by Henry Wells and William Fargo.
b. 1892 former Governor General Lord Stanley pledged to donate a silver challenge cup to the best hockey team in Canada later named after him as the Stanley Cup and won last year by the Chicago Blackhawks.
c. 1938 Mexico expropriated all oil reserves and facilities of foreign owned companies operating in Mexico.
d. 1959 President Eisenhower signed legislation that would admit Hawaii as the 50th State effective August 21, 1959.
e. 2015 the Bardo National Museum in Tunisia was attacked by three ISIS terrorists, killing 24 and wounding at least 50, almost all of which were tourists. Two of the fanatics punched their one way ticket to their misguided Paradise and the other is still on the loose.
Reflections on being Mexico’s expropriation of oil from the lips of its president: I ask the entire Nation to furnish the necessary moral and material support to face the consequences of a decision which we, of our own free will, would neither have sought nor desired.” Lazaro Cardenas Imagine what our reliance on OPEC would have been if we had annexed Mexico after the Mexican American War; it would have been zero.
